1 Three Classes of Men

۞ إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ ۝١

When the Inevitable Event (i.e., the Day of Resurrection) has befallen

idhā waqaʿati l-wāqiʿat

لَیۡسَ لِوَقۡعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ۝٢

There is no false statement regarding its appointed time

laysa liwaqʿatihā kādhibatu

خَافِضَةࣱ رَّافِعَةٌ ۝٣

(It is) one that causes to go low (and it is) one that exalts (some others to a higher rank than the one they experienced in the worldly life)

khāfiḍatun rāfiʿatu

إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ رَجࣰّا ۝٤

When the earth stands shaken in a terrible tremor

idhā rujjati l-arḍu rajja

وَبُسَّتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ بَسࣰّا ۝٥

And the mountains stand powdered to dust

wabussati l-jibālu bassa

فَكَانَتۡ هَبَاۤءࣰ مُّنۢبَثࣰّا ۝٦

So (the firm and fixed mountains) became dust and debris made to float and fly

fakānat habāan munbatha

وَكُنتُمۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣰا ثَلَـٰثَةࣰ ۝٧

And (O mankind!) you have become three (separate) groups

wakuntum azwājan thalāthata

فَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَیۡمَنَةِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَیۡمَنَةِ ۝٨

So the occupiers of the Desirable Site: what (is meant by) ‘the occupiers of the Desirable Site'

fa-aṣḥābu l-maymanati mā aṣḥābu l-maymanat

وَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡءَمَةِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡءَمَةِ ۝٩

And the occupiers of the undesirable site: what (is meant by) ‘the occupiers of the undesirable site'

wa-aṣḥābu l-mashamati mā aṣḥābu l-mashamat

وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ۝١٠

And the Foremost (are on the) Foremost (Site)

wal-sābiqūna l-sābiqūn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ ۝١١

Those people (are) the ones made closest (to Allah)—

ulāika l-muqarabūn

فِی جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝١٢

in the Gardens of Delight

fī jannāti l-naʿīm

ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣

a major portion from the initial ones

thullatun mina l-awalīn

وَقَلِیلࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١٤

and a small portion from the later ones. [This refers to each and every period of human history when Al-Kitab has been directly propagated and preached to a society or nation]

waqalīlun mina l-ākhirīn

عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مَّوۡضُونَةࣲ ۝١٥

(These successful people will be seated) on seats woven with gold and precious stones—

muttakiīna ʿalayhā mutaqābilīn

مُّتَّكِءِینَ عَلَیۡهَا مُتَقَـٰبِلِینَ ۝١٦

(as) those who recline thereon (and as) those who sit in front of one another

Muttaki-eena AAalayha mutaqabileena

یَطُوفُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وِلۡدَ ٰنࣱ مُّخَلَّدُونَ ۝١٧

Youthful lads, granted perpetual freshness shall move all around them—

yaṭūfu ʿalayhim wil'dānun mukhalladūn

بِأَكۡوَابࣲ وَأَبَارِیقَ وَكَأۡسࣲ مِّن مَّعِینࣲ ۝١٨

alongwith cups and jugs, and a glass (full) of a freely flowing (drink)

bi-akwābin wa-abārīqa wakasin min maʿīni

لَّا یُصَدَّعُونَ عَنۡهَا وَلَا یُنزِفُونَ ۝١٩

whereof they are not given aching of the head; and nor they go into intoxication

lā yuṣaddaʿūna ʿanhā walā yunzifūn

وَفَـٰكِهَةࣲ مِّمَّا یَتَخَیَّرُونَ ۝٢٠

And fruits out of that which they shall desire

wafākihatin mimmā yatakhayyarūn

وَلَحۡمِ طَیۡرࣲ مِّمَّا یَشۡتَهُونَ ۝٢١

And the flesh of bird out of that which they crave for

walaḥmi ṭayrin mimmā yashtahūn

وَحُورٌ عِینࣱ ۝٢٢

And Hurun Eeinun

waḥūrun ʿīnu

كَأَمۡثَـٰلِ ٱللُّؤۡلُوِٕ ٱلۡمَكۡنُونِ ۝٢٣

like the shapes of the pearls, well preserved

ka-amthāli l-lu'lu-i l-maknūn

جَزَاۤءَۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٤

as a reward for what they used to do

jazāan bimā kānū yaʿmalūn

لَا یَسۡمَعُونَ فِیهَا لَغۡوࣰا وَلَا تَأۡثِیمًا ۝٢٥

They shall not listen therein (any) Laghw (vain talk), nor anything sinful

lā yasmaʿūna fīhā laghwan walā tathīma

إِلَّا قِیلࣰا سَلَـٰمࣰا سَلَـٰمࣰا ۝٢٦

except (the) utterance: Salam! , Salam!

illā qīlan salāman salāma

وَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡیَمِینِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٢٧

And the Rightists: what (is meant by) the Rightists

wa-aṣḥābu l-yamīni mā aṣḥābu l-yamīn

فِی سِدۡرࣲ مَّخۡضُودࣲ ۝٢٨

Under the thornless Lote-tree

fī sid'rin makhḍūdi

وَطَلۡحࣲ مَّنضُودࣲ ۝٢٩

and clustered banana

waṭalḥin manḍūdi

وَظِلࣲّ مَّمۡدُودࣲ ۝٣٠

and extended shade

waẓillin mamdūdi

وَمَاۤءࣲ مَّسۡكُوبࣲ ۝٣١

wamāin maskūbi

وَفَـٰكِهَةࣲ كَثِیرَةࣲ ۝٣٢

and fruit in abundance —

wafākihatin kathīrati

لَّا مَقۡطُوعَةࣲ وَلَا مَمۡنُوعَةࣲ ۝٣٣

neither interrupted in supply (due to season), and nor prohibited (due to any side-effects on any one)

lā maqṭūʿatin walā mamnūʿati

وَفُرُشࣲ مَّرۡفُوعَةٍ ۝٣٤

and carpets hanging (as decoration)

wafurushin marfūʿati

إِنَّاۤ أَنشَأۡنَـٰهُنَّ إِنشَاۤءࣰ ۝٣٥

Verily We, We have created them (see Verse Nos. 22, 23) of special creation

innā anshanāhunna inshāa

فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُنَّ أَبۡكَارًا ۝٣٦

so We made them chaste and youthful

fajaʿalnāhunna abkāra

عُرُبًا أَتۡرَابࣰا ۝٣٧

polite, of identical age and nature —

li-aṣḥābi l-yamīn

لِّأَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٣٨

for the Rightists

Li-as-habi alyameeni

2 The Guilty

ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٣٩

a major portion from the initial ones

thullatun mina l-awalīn

وَثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٤٠

and a major portion of the later ones

wathullatun mina l-ākhirīn

وَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ ۝٤١

And the leftists: What (is meant by) the leftists

wa-aṣḥābu l-shimāli mā aṣḥābu l-shimāl

فِی سَمُومࣲ وَحَمِیمࣲ ۝٤٢

(The leftists shall suffer) in dry hot wind and boiling (water)

fī samūmin waḥamīmi

وَظِلࣲّ مِّن یَحۡمُومࣲ ۝٤٣

and shadow of black smoke

waẓillin min yaḥmūmi

لَّا بَارِدࣲ وَلَا كَرِیمٍ ۝٤٤

neither cool and nor palatable

lā bāridin walā karīmi

إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ قَبۡلَ ذَ ٰلِكَ مُتۡرَفِینَ ۝٤٥

Verily, they used to be before (this stage) — those who indulge in luxury

innahum kānū qabla dhālika mut'rafīn

وَكَانُوا۟ یُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلۡحِنثِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٤٦

And they used to insist on extreme sin

wakānū yuṣirrūna ʿalā l-ḥinthi l-ʿaẓīm

وَكَانُوا۟ یَقُولُونَ أَىِٕذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ ۝٤٧

And they used to say: “Whether, when we have died and we changed into dust and bones shall surely we be indeed those who stand resurrected

wakānū yaqūlūna a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamabʿūthūn

أَوَ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ ۝٤٨

What? And our forefathers (too)?”

awaābāunā l-awalūn

قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ وَٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٤٩

Say: “Surely, the earlier ones as well as the later ones —

qul inna l-awalīna wal-ākhirīn

لَمَجۡمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِیقَـٰتِ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٥٠

indeed would be those who are assembled for an appointed time of (the) Well-known Day.

lamajmūʿūna ilā mīqāti yawmin maʿlūmi

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمۡ أَیُّهَا ٱلضَّاۤلُّونَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٥١

Then surely, you people, O you erring and straying ones, the deniers and rejectors

thumma innakum ayyuhā l-ḍālūna l-mukadhibūn

لَءَاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرࣲ مِّن زَقُّومࣲ ۝٥٢

would be surely those who are about to eat out of the tree of Zaqqum

laākilūna min shajarin min zaqqūmi

فَمَالِءُونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ ۝٥٣

then are about to fill up (their) bellies therewith

famāliūna min'hā l-buṭūn

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَیۡهِ مِنَ ٱلۡحَمِیمِ ۝٥٤

then are about to drink on top of it from boiling water

fashāribūna ʿalayhi mina l-ḥamīm

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرۡبَ ٱلۡهِیمِ ۝٥٥

then are about to drink in the style of the drinhead of state act of a thirsty (camel)

fashāribūna shur'ba l-hīm

هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٥٦

This (is the) reception unto them on (the) Day of Judgment

hādhā nuzuluhum yawma l-dīn

نَحۡنُ خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ فَلَوۡلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ ۝٥٧

We have created you, so why don't you verify (all these facts by studying and accepting Allah’s Al-Kitab)

naḥnu khalaqnākum falawlā tuṣaddiqūn

أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا تُمۡنُونَ ۝٥٨

Have you then (ever) pondered over what semen you emit

afara-aytum mā tum'nūn

ءَأَنتُمۡ تَخۡلُقُونَهُۥۤ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡخَـٰلِقُونَ ۝٥٩

Do you, you create it, or We are the Creators

a-antum takhluqūnahu am naḥnu l-khāliqūn

نَحۡنُ قَدَّرۡنَا بَیۡنَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِینَ ۝٦٠

We, We have assessed the time of death amongst you, and We are not those who could be prevente

naḥnu qaddarnā baynakumu l-mawta wamā naḥnu bimasbūqīn

عَلَىٰۤ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمۡثَـٰلَكُمۡ وَنُنشِئَكُمۡ فِی مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٦١

from that We may replace (someothers) similar to you; and We may make you grow into (a new creation) which you do not comprehend

walaqad ʿalim'tumu l-nashata l-ūlā falawlā tadhakkarūn

وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡتُمُ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ فَلَوۡلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٦٢

And surely, indeed you have become acquainted with the initial creative-process; so why don’t you pay heed to the Message

Walaqad AAalimtumu alnnash-ata al-oola falawla tathakkaroona

أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا تَحۡرُثُونَ ۝٦٣

Have you then pondered what you sow

afara-aytum mā taḥruthūn

ءَأَنتُمۡ تَزۡرَعُونَهُۥۤ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلزَّ ٰرِعُونَ ۝٦٤

Do you, you make it grow, or are We the Growers

a-antum tazraʿūnahu am naḥnu l-zāriʿūn

لَوۡ نَشَاۤءُ لَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُ حُطَـٰمࣰا فَظَلۡتُمۡ تَفَكَّهُونَ ۝٦٥

If We desire, surely We made it a decomposed piece; then you were — you regret and lament (thus)

law nashāu lajaʿalnāhu ḥuṭāman faẓaltum tafakkahūn

إِنَّا لَمُغۡرَمُونَ ۝٦٦

“Verily, we (are) indeed those burdened in debts

innā lamugh'ramūn

بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُومُونَ ۝٦٧

Nay! We are deprived ones!”

bal naḥnu maḥrūmūn

أَفَرَءَیۡتُمُ ٱلۡمَاۤءَ ٱلَّذِی تَشۡرَبُونَ ۝٦٨

Have you then (ever) pondered over the water which you people drink

afara-aytumu l-māa alladhī tashrabūn

ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنزَلۡتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُزۡنِ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنزِلُونَ ۝٦٩

Have you, you, made it descend from the laden cloud, or We are those Who bring it down (as rains)

a-antum anzaltumūhu mina l-muz'ni am naḥnu l-munzilūn

لَوۡ نَشَاۤءُ جَعَلۡنَـٰهُ أُجَاجࣰا فَلَوۡلَا تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝٧٠

If We desire, We could make it salty; then why don’t you pay thanks (for the Bounties of Allah)

law nashāu jaʿalnāhu ujājan falawlā tashkurūn

أَفَرَءَیۡتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِی تُورُونَ ۝٧١

Have you then pondered about the fire which you kindle

afara-aytumu l-nāra allatī tūrūn

ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنشَأۡتُمۡ شَجَرَتَهَاۤ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنشِءُونَ ۝٧٢

Have you, you grew its tree, or We are the Growers

a-antum anshatum shajaratahā am naḥnu l-munshiūn

نَحۡنُ جَعَلۡنَـٰهَا تَذۡكِرَةࣰ وَمَتَـٰعࣰا لِّلۡمُقۡوِینَ ۝٧٣

We, We have made it a reminder (of Our Handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts

naḥnu jaʿalnāhā tadhkiratan wamatāʿan lil'muq'wīn

فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٧٤

So make Glorifications with the Name of your Supreme Nourisher-Sustainer

fasabbiḥ bi-is'mi rabbika l-ʿaẓīm

3 Judgment is Inevitable

۞ فَلَاۤ أُقۡسِمُ بِمَوَ ٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ ۝٧٥

So no (blind Faith)! I bring to evidence the shooting of the stars

falā uq'simu bimawāqiʿi l-nujūm

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمࣱ لَّوۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ عَظِیمٌ ۝٧٦

And surely this indeed is a mighty oath if you know

wa-innahu laqasamun law taʿlamūna ʿaẓīmu

إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرۡءَانࣱ كَرِیمࣱ ۝٧٧

Surely this indeed is Quranul Karim (‘An Honourable Reading or Recital’)

innahu laqur'ānun karīmu

فِی كِتَـٰبࣲ مَّكۡنُونࣲ ۝٧٨

in the form of a Book, well guarded

fī kitābin maknūni

لَّا یَمَسُّهُۥۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُطَهَّرُونَ ۝٧٩

Shall not approach it (for direct understanding) except Al-Muttahharun (those who have been cleansed of non-Divine human-influences in the matters of Religion)

lā yamassuhu illā l-muṭaharūn

تَنزِیلࣱ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٨٠

(It is) a Descent from (the) Nourisher-Sustainer of the worlds

tanzīlun min rabbi l-ʿālamīn

أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِیثِ أَنتُم مُّدۡهِنُونَ ۝٨١

Would then, with this Al-Hadees you are those who feel reluctance

afabihādhā l-ḥadīthi antum mud'hinūn

وَتَجۡعَلُونَ رِزۡقَكُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ تُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٨٢

And you have made it your livelihood that you declare (this Book) as false. [You deny or damage the Unique status and position of Allah’s Scripture]

watajʿalūna riz'qakum annakum tukadhibūn

فَلَوۡلَاۤ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلۡحُلۡقُومَ ۝٨٣

Then why don’t (you intervene) when (the soul of a dying person) has reached the throat

falawlā idhā balaghati l-ḥul'qūm

وَأَنتُمۡ حِینَىِٕذࣲ تَنظُرُونَ ۝٨٤

and you are at that moment loohead of state on as a helpless person

wa-antum ḥīna-idhin tanẓurūn

وَنَحۡنُ أَقۡرَبُ إِلَیۡهِ مِنكُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبۡصِرُونَ ۝٨٥

and We are nearer to this (dying person) than you (are) — but you see not

wanaḥnu aqrabu ilayhi minkum walākin lā tub'ṣirūn

فَلَوۡلَاۤ إِن كُنتُمۡ غَیۡرَ مَدِینِینَ ۝٨٦

Then why don’t you — if you are other than those whose abilities have been made limited (by Allah)—

falawlā in kuntum ghayra madīnīn

تَرۡجِعُونَهَاۤ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝٨٧

bring back that (soul which is leaving the body) — if you are those who speak the truth

tarjiʿūnahā in kuntum ṣādiqīn

فَأَمَّاۤ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِینَ ۝٨٨

So if it is, if he became of those who have been sanctioned nearness (to Allah)

fa-ammā in kāna mina l-muqarabīn

فَرَوۡحࣱ وَرَیۡحَانࣱ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِیمࣲ ۝٨٩

(then for such a one is) rest and fragrance and a Garden of Bliss

farawḥun warayḥānun wajannatu naʿīmi

وَأَمَّاۤ إِن كَانَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٩٠

So if it is, if he became of the Rightists

wa-ammā in kāna min aṣḥābi l-yamīn

فَسَلَـٰمࣱ لَّكَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٩١

then (a greeting of) Salam unto you from the Rightists

fasalāmun laka min aṣḥābi l-yamīn

وَأَمَّاۤ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٩٢

And if it is, if he became of the deniers and the straying ones

wa-ammā in kāna mina l-mukadhibīna l-ḍālīn

فَنُزُلࣱ مِّنۡ حَمِیمࣲ ۝٩٣

then a 'reception' with boiling (water)

fanuzulun min ḥamīmi

وَتَصۡلِیَةُ جَحِیمٍ ۝٩٤

and becoming a part of’ Hell-Fire

wataṣliyatu jaḥīmi

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلۡیَقِینِ ۝٩٥

Verily, this (Scripture of Allah) surely it (is) Haqq-ul-Yaqin (‘Truth with Certainty’)

inna hādhā lahuwa ḥaqqu l-yaqīn

فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٩٦

So make Glorifications with the Name of your Supreme Nourisher-Sustainer

fasabbiḥ bi-is'mi rabbika l-ʿaẓīm
