1 Three Classes of Men
56:1 ›
۞ إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ ۝١
Bridges
When the inevitable event befalls,
idhā waqaʿati l-wāqiʿat
56:2 ›
لَیۡسَ لِوَقۡعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ۝٢
Bridges
no disbelief will there be about its befalling,
laysa liwaqʿatihā kādhibatu
56:3 ›
خَافِضَةࣱ رَّافِعَةٌ ۝٣
Bridges
bringing low, raising high.
khāfiḍatun rāfiʿatu
56:4 ›
إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ رَجࣰّا ۝٤
Bridges
When the earth is shaken violently,
idhā rujjati l-arḍu rajja
56:5 ›
وَبُسَّتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ بَسࣰّا ۝٥
Bridges
and mountains are crushed and crumbled
wabussati l-jibālu bassa
56:6 ›
فَكَانَتۡ هَبَاۤءࣰ مُّنۢبَثࣰّا ۝٦
Bridges
and become scattered dust,
fakānat habāan munbatha
56:7 ›
وَكُنتُمۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣰا ثَلَـٰثَةࣰ ۝٧
Bridges
and you become three classes:
wakuntum azwājan thalāthata
56:8 ›
فَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَیۡمَنَةِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَیۡمَنَةِ ۝٨
Bridges
the fellows of the rightness; what of the fellows of the rightness!
fa-aṣḥābu l-maymanati mā aṣḥābu l-maymanat
56:9 ›
وَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡءَمَةِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡءَمَةِ ۝٩
Bridges
And the fellows of the ill-omened; what of the fellows of the ill-omened!
wa-aṣḥābu l-mashamati mā aṣḥābu l-mashamat
56:10 ›
وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ۝١٠
Bridges
And the pioneers, the pioneers:
wal-sābiqūna l-sābiqūn
56:11 ›
أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ ۝١١
Bridges
those are the ones brought near (to God)
ulāika l-muqarabūn
56:12 ›
فِی جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝١٢
Bridges
in the Gardens of Bliss—
fī jannāti l-naʿīm
56:13 ›
ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝١٣
Bridges
a throng from the ancients
thullatun mina l-awalīn
56:14 ›
وَقَلِیلࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝١٤
Bridges
and a small band from the latecomers,
waqalīlun mina l-ākhirīn
56:15 ›
عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مَّوۡضُونَةࣲ ۝١٥
Bridges
on luxurious couches,
muttakiīna ʿalayhā mutaqābilīn
56:16 ›
مُّتَّكِءِینَ عَلَیۡهَا مُتَقَـٰبِلِینَ ۝١٦
Bridges
leaning on them, facing one another.
Muttaki-eena AAalayha mutaqabileena
56:17 ›
یَطُوفُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ وِلۡدَ ٰنࣱ مُّخَلَّدُونَ ۝١٧
Bridges
Serving them will be immortal youths
yaṭūfu ʿalayhim wil'dānun mukhalladūn
56:18 ›
بِأَكۡوَابࣲ وَأَبَارِیقَ وَكَأۡسࣲ مِّن مَّعِینࣲ ۝١٨
Bridges
with glasses, and pitchers, and a cup from a flowing spring,
bi-akwābin wa-abārīqa wakasin min maʿīni
56:19 ›
لَّا یُصَدَّعُونَ عَنۡهَا وَلَا یُنزِفُونَ ۝١٩
Bridges
causing them neither headache nor intoxication,
lā yuṣaddaʿūna ʿanhā walā yunzifūn
56:20 ›
وَفَـٰكِهَةࣲ مِّمَّا یَتَخَیَّرُونَ ۝٢٠
Bridges
and fruit of their choice,
wafākihatin mimmā yatakhayyarūn
56:21 ›
وَلَحۡمِ طَیۡرࣲ مِّمَّا یَشۡتَهُونَ ۝٢١
Bridges
and meat of any bird they may desire.
walaḥmi ṭayrin mimmā yashtahūn
56:22 ›
وَحُورٌ عِینࣱ ۝٢٢
Bridges
And (in it are) spouses with lovely wide eyes,
waḥūrun ʿīnu
56:23 ›
كَأَمۡثَـٰلِ ٱللُّؤۡلُوِٕ ٱلۡمَكۡنُونِ ۝٢٣
Bridges
like well-preserved pearls,
ka-amthāli l-lu'lu-i l-maknūn
56:24 ›
جَزَاۤءَۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٤
Bridges
as a repayment on account of what they used to do.
jazāan bimā kānū yaʿmalūn
56:25 ›
لَا یَسۡمَعُونَ فِیهَا لَغۡوࣰا وَلَا تَأۡثِیمًا ۝٢٥
Bridges
Therein they will hear no idle talk and no recrimination
lā yasmaʿūna fīhā laghwan walā tathīma
56:26 ›
إِلَّا قِیلࣰا سَلَـٰمࣰا سَلَـٰمࣰا ۝٢٦
Bridges
except for the saying: “Peace, peace.”
illā qīlan salāman salāma
56:27 ›
وَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡیَمِینِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٢٧
Bridges
And the fellows of the right—what of the fellows of the right?
wa-aṣḥābu l-yamīni mā aṣḥābu l-yamīn
56:28 ›
فِی سِدۡرࣲ مَّخۡضُودࣲ ۝٢٨
Bridges
Amid thornless lote-trees
fī sid'rin makhḍūdi
56:29 ›
وَطَلۡحࣲ مَّنضُودࣲ ۝٢٩
Bridges
and clustered banana-trees
waṭalḥin manḍūdi
56:30 ›
وَظِلࣲّ مَّمۡدُودࣲ ۝٣٠
Bridges
and extended shade
waẓillin mamdūdi
56:31 ›
وَمَاۤءࣲ مَّسۡكُوبࣲ ۝٣١
Bridges
and outpouring water
wamāin maskūbi
56:32 ›
وَفَـٰكِهَةࣲ كَثِیرَةࣲ ۝٣٢
Bridges
and abundant fruit,
wafākihatin kathīrati
56:33 ›
لَّا مَقۡطُوعَةࣲ وَلَا مَمۡنُوعَةࣲ ۝٣٣
Bridges
neither withheld nor forbidden.
lā maqṭūʿatin walā mamnūʿati
56:34 ›
وَفُرُشࣲ مَّرۡفُوعَةٍ ۝٣٤
Bridges
And high-class spouses;
wafurushin marfūʿati
56:35 ›
إِنَّاۤ أَنشَأۡنَـٰهُنَّ إِنشَاۤءࣰ ۝٣٥
Bridges
We have created them perfectly
innā anshanāhunna inshāa
56:36 ›
فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُنَّ أَبۡكَارًا ۝٣٦
Bridges
and made them virgins,
fajaʿalnāhunna abkāra
56:37 ›
عُرُبًا أَتۡرَابࣰا ۝٣٧
Bridges
tender, of matching age,
li-aṣḥābi l-yamīn
56:38 ›
لِّأَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٣٨
Bridges
for the fellows of the right—
Li-as-habi alyameeni
2 The Guilty
56:39 ›
ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ۝٣٩
Bridges
a throng from the ancients
thullatun mina l-awalīn
56:40 ›
وَثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٤٠
Bridges
and a throng from the latecomers.
wathullatun mina l-ākhirīn
56:41 ›
وَأَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَاۤ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ ۝٤١
Bridges
And the fellows of the left—what of the fellows of the left?
wa-aṣḥābu l-shimāli mā aṣḥābu l-shimāl
56:42 ›
فِی سَمُومࣲ وَحَمِیمࣲ ۝٤٢
Bridges
Amid searing wind and scalding water
fī samūmin waḥamīmi
56:43 ›
وَظِلࣲّ مِّن یَحۡمُومࣲ ۝٤٣
Bridges
and a shadow of thick smoke,
waẓillin min yaḥmūmi
56:44 ›
لَّا بَارِدࣲ وَلَا كَرِیمٍ ۝٤٤
Bridges
neither cool nor refreshing.
lā bāridin walā karīmi
56:45 ›
إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ قَبۡلَ ذَ ٰلِكَ مُتۡرَفِینَ ۝٤٥
Bridges
They had lived before that indulging in affluence,
innahum kānū qabla dhālika mut'rafīn
56:46 ›
وَكَانُوا۟ یُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلۡحِنثِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٤٦
Bridges
and they used to insist on great violation,
wakānū yuṣirrūna ʿalā l-ḥinthi l-ʿaẓīm
56:47 ›
وَكَانُوا۟ یَقُولُونَ أَىِٕذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ ۝٤٧
Bridges
and they used to say, “Can it be that when we have died and become dust and bones—can it be that we will really be resurrected?
wakānū yaqūlūna a-idhā mit'nā wakunnā turāban waʿiẓāman a-innā lamabʿūthūn
56:48 ›
أَوَ ءَابَاۤؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ ۝٤٨
Bridges
And our ancient forefathers, too?”
awaābāunā l-awalūn
56:49 ›
قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ وَٱلۡءَاخِرِینَ ۝٤٩
Bridges
Saysg, “Indeed, the ancients and the latecomers
qul inna l-awalīna wal-ākhirīn
56:50 ›
لَمَجۡمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِیقَـٰتِ یَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ۝٥٠
Bridges
will be gathered for the appointment of a well-known day!
lamajmūʿūna ilā mīqāti yawmin maʿlūmi
56:51 ›
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمۡ أَیُّهَا ٱلضَّاۤلُّونَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٥١
Bridges
Then indeed all of you, O misguided disbelievers,
thumma innakum ayyuhā l-ḍālūna l-mukadhibūn
56:52 ›
لَءَاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرࣲ مِّن زَقُّومࣲ ۝٥٢
Bridges
will certainly be eating from the trees of Zaqqum
laākilūna min shajarin min zaqqūmi
56:53 ›
فَمَالِءُونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ ۝٥٣
Bridges
and filling your bellies with it
famāliūna min'hā l-buṭūn
56:54 ›
فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَیۡهِ مِنَ ٱلۡحَمِیمِ ۝٥٤
Bridges
and will be drinking on top of it scalding water,
fashāribūna ʿalayhi mina l-ḥamīm
56:55 ›
فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرۡبَ ٱلۡهِیمِ ۝٥٥
Bridges
thus drinking as a thirst-mad camel drinks."
fashāribūna shur'ba l-hīm
56:56 ›
هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلدِّینِ ۝٥٦
Bridges
That is their hospitality on the Day of Recompense.
hādhā nuzuluhum yawma l-dīn
56:57 ›
نَحۡنُ خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ فَلَوۡلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ ۝٥٧
Bridges
We have created youpl; if only you would believe!
naḥnu khalaqnākum falawlā tuṣaddiqūn
56:58 ›
أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا تُمۡنُونَ ۝٥٨
Bridges
Have youpl seen what you ejaculate?
afara-aytum mā tum'nūn
56:59 ›
ءَأَنتُمۡ تَخۡلُقُونَهُۥۤ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡخَـٰلِقُونَ ۝٥٩
Bridges
Is it youpl who create it or are We the Creators?
a-antum takhluqūnahu am naḥnu l-khāliqūn
56:60 ›
نَحۡنُ قَدَّرۡنَا بَیۡنَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِینَ ۝٦٠
Bridges
We have decreed death among youpl, and We will not be outstripped
naḥnu qaddarnā baynakumu l-mawta wamā naḥnu bimasbūqīn
56:61 ›
عَلَىٰۤ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمۡثَـٰلَكُمۡ وَنُنشِئَكُمۡ فِی مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٦١
Bridges
in replacing you with your likes and transforming you into what you do not know.
walaqad ʿalim'tumu l-nashata l-ūlā falawlā tadhakkarūn
56:62 ›
وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡتُمُ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ فَلَوۡلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٦٢
Bridges
And youpl have certainly known the first formation; if only you would remind yourselves!
Walaqad AAalimtumu alnnash-ata al-oola falawla tathakkaroona
56:63 ›
أَفَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا تَحۡرُثُونَ ۝٦٣
Bridges
Have youpl seen what you cultivate?
afara-aytum mā taḥruthūn
56:64 ›
ءَأَنتُمۡ تَزۡرَعُونَهُۥۤ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلزَّ ٰرِعُونَ ۝٦٤
Bridges
Is it you who plant it or are We the Planters?
a-antum tazraʿūnahu am naḥnu l-zāriʿūn
56:65 ›
لَوۡ نَشَاۤءُ لَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُ حُطَـٰمࣰا فَظَلۡتُمۡ تَفَكَّهُونَ ۝٦٥
Bridges
If We will, We can turn it into rubble, then youpl will lament,
law nashāu lajaʿalnāhu ḥuṭāman faẓaltum tafakkahūn
56:66 ›
إِنَّا لَمُغۡرَمُونَ ۝٦٦
Bridges
“Indeed, we are in debt;
innā lamugh'ramūn
56:67 ›
بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُومُونَ ۝٦٧
Bridges
rather, we are dispossessed!”
bal naḥnu maḥrūmūn
56:68 ›
أَفَرَءَیۡتُمُ ٱلۡمَاۤءَ ٱلَّذِی تَشۡرَبُونَ ۝٦٨
Bridges
Have youpl seen the water you drink?
afara-aytumu l-māa alladhī tashrabūn
56:69 ›
ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنزَلۡتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُزۡنِ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنزِلُونَ ۝٦٩
Bridges
Is it you who sent it down from the rainclouds or are We the Senders?
a-antum anzaltumūhu mina l-muz'ni am naḥnu l-munzilūn
56:70 ›
لَوۡ نَشَاۤءُ جَعَلۡنَـٰهُ أُجَاجࣰا فَلَوۡلَا تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝٧٠
Bridges
If We will, We can make it salty. Will youpl not be thankful?
law nashāu jaʿalnāhu ujājan falawlā tashkurūn
56:71 ›
أَفَرَءَیۡتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِی تُورُونَ ۝٧١
Bridges
Have you seen the fire you kindle?
afara-aytumu l-nāra allatī tūrūn
56:72 ›
ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنشَأۡتُمۡ شَجَرَتَهَاۤ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنشِءُونَ ۝٧٢
Bridges
Is it you who produced the tree for it, or are We the Producers?
a-antum anshatum shajaratahā am naḥnu l-munshiūn
56:73 ›
نَحۡنُ جَعَلۡنَـٰهَا تَذۡكِرَةࣰ وَمَتَـٰعࣰا لِّلۡمُقۡوِینَ ۝٧٣
Bridges
We have made it a reminding and a comfort for the travelers.
naḥnu jaʿalnāhā tadhkiratan wamatāʿan lil'muq'wīn
56:74 ›
فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٧٤
Bridges
So highly exalt the Name of yoursg Lord, the Great.
fasabbiḥ bi-is'mi rabbika l-ʿaẓīm
3 Judgment is Inevitable
56:75 ›
۞ فَلَاۤ أُقۡسِمُ بِمَوَ ٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ ۝٧٥
Bridges
I swear by the locations of the stars—
falā uq'simu bimawāqiʿi l-nujūm
56:76 ›
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمࣱ لَّوۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ عَظِیمٌ ۝٧٦
Bridges
and it is certainly a great oath if only youpl were to know.
wa-innahu laqasamun law taʿlamūna ʿaẓīmu
56:77 ›
إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرۡءَانࣱ كَرِیمࣱ ۝٧٧
Bridges
It is indeed a Noble Recital
innahu laqur'ānun karīmu
56:78 ›
فِی كِتَـٰبࣲ مَّكۡنُونࣲ ۝٧٨
Bridges
in a well-protected Scripture.
fī kitābin maknūni
56:79 ›
لَّا یَمَسُّهُۥۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُطَهَّرُونَ ۝٧٩
Bridges
None touches it except the cleansed,
lā yamassuhu illā l-muṭaharūn
56:80 ›
تَنزِیلࣱ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٨٠
Bridges
a bestowal from on high by the Lord of all realms.
tanzīlun min rabbi l-ʿālamīn
56:81 ›
أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِیثِ أَنتُم مُّدۡهِنُونَ ۝٨١
Bridges
Is it this discourse that youpl take so lightly?
afabihādhā l-ḥadīthi antum mud'hinūn
56:82 ›
وَتَجۡعَلُونَ رِزۡقَكُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ تُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٨٢
Bridges
And you render due thanks for being provided with it by disbelieving in it?
watajʿalūna riz'qakum annakum tukadhibūn
56:83 ›
فَلَوۡلَاۤ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلۡحُلۡقُومَ ۝٨٣
Bridges
So when it has reached the throat,
falawlā idhā balaghati l-ḥul'qūm
56:84 ›
وَأَنتُمۡ حِینَىِٕذࣲ تَنظُرُونَ ۝٨٤
Bridges
and you are at that moment looking on,
wa-antum ḥīna-idhin tanẓurūn
56:85 ›
وَنَحۡنُ أَقۡرَبُ إِلَیۡهِ مِنكُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبۡصِرُونَ ۝٨٥
Bridges
and We are nearer to him than you are, but you do not see—
wanaḥnu aqrabu ilayhi minkum walākin lā tub'ṣirūn
56:86 ›
فَلَوۡلَاۤ إِن كُنتُمۡ غَیۡرَ مَدِینِینَ ۝٨٦
Bridges
why, if you are not to be held to account,
falawlā in kuntum ghayra madīnīn
56:87 ›
تَرۡجِعُونَهَاۤ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝٨٧
Bridges
do you not bring it back if you are truthful?
tarjiʿūnahā in kuntum ṣādiqīn
56:88 ›
فَأَمَّاۤ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِینَ ۝٨٨
Bridges
Yet, if he is one of those brought near (to God),
fa-ammā in kāna mina l-muqarabīn
56:89 ›
فَرَوۡحࣱ وَرَیۡحَانࣱ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِیمࣲ ۝٨٩
Bridges
then serenity and fragrant plants and a Garden of Bliss.
farawḥun warayḥānun wajannatu naʿīmi
56:90 ›
وَأَمَّاۤ إِن كَانَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٩٠
Bridges
And if he is one of the fellows of the right,
wa-ammā in kāna min aṣḥābi l-yamīn
56:91 ›
فَسَلَـٰمࣱ لَّكَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡیَمِینِ ۝٩١
Bridges
then, “Peace for yousg,” from the fellows of the right.
fasalāmun laka min aṣḥābi l-yamīn
56:92 ›
وَأَمَّاۤ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ ٱلضَّاۤلِّینَ ۝٩٢
Bridges
But if he is one of the misguided disbelievers,
wa-ammā in kāna mina l-mukadhibīna l-ḍālīn
56:93 ›
فَنُزُلࣱ مِّنۡ حَمِیمࣲ ۝٩٣
Bridges
then the welcome will be scalding water
fanuzulun min ḥamīmi
56:94 ›
وَتَصۡلِیَةُ جَحِیمٍ ۝٩٤
Bridges
and roasting in purgatory.
wataṣliyatu jaḥīmi
56:95 ›
إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلۡیَقِینِ ۝٩٥
Bridges
Indeed, this is surely the truth of certitude.
inna hādhā lahuwa ḥaqqu l-yaqīn
56:96 ›
فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٩٦
Bridges
So highly exalt the Name of yoursg Lord, the Great.
fasabbiḥ bi-is'mi rabbika l-ʿaẓīm
