بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

1 Falsehood is doomed

وَٱلذَّ ٰرِیَـٰتِ ذَرۡوࣰا ۝١

By those [winds] that scatter far and wide

wal-dhāriyāti dharwa

فَٱلۡحَـٰمِلَـٰتِ وِقۡرࣰا ۝٢

and those that are heavily laden

fal-ḥāmilāti wiq'ra

فَٱلۡجَـٰرِیَـٰتِ یُسۡرࣰا ۝٣

that speed freely

fal-jāriyāti yus'ra

فَٱلۡمُقَسِّمَـٰتِ أَمۡرًا ۝٤

that distribute [rain] as ordained

fal-muqasimāti amra

إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَصَادِقࣱ ۝٥

What you [people] are promised is true

innamā tūʿadūna laṣādiqu

وَإِنَّ ٱلدِّینَ لَوَ ٰقِعࣱ ۝٦

the Judgement will come––

wa-inna l-dīna lawāqiʿu

وَٱلسَّمَاۤءِ ذَاتِ ٱلۡحُبُكِ ۝٧

by the sky with its pathways

wal-samāi dhāti l-ḥubuk

إِنَّكُمۡ لَفِی قَوۡلࣲ مُّخۡتَلِفࣲ ۝٨

you differ in what you say––

innakum lafī qawlin mukh'talifi

یُؤۡفَكُ عَنۡهُ مَنۡ أُفِكَ ۝٩

those who turn away from it are [truly] deceived

yu'faku ʿanhu man ufik

قُتِلَ ٱلۡخَرَّ ٰصُونَ ۝١٠

Perish the liars

qutila l-kharāṣūn

ٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ فِی غَمۡرَةࣲ سَاهُونَ ۝١١

those steeped in error and unaware

alladhīna hum fī ghamratin sāhūn

یَسۡءَلُونَ أَیَّانَ یَوۡمُ ٱلدِّینِ ۝١٢

They ask, ‘When is this Judgement Day coming?’

yasalūna ayyāna yawmu l-dīn

یَوۡمَ هُمۡ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ یُفۡتَنُونَ ۝١٣

On a Day when they will be punished by the Fire

yawma hum ʿalā l-nāri yuf'tanūn

ذُوقُوا۟ فِتۡنَتَكُمۡ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِی كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ۝١٤

‘Taste the punishment! This is what you wished to hasten.’

dhūqū fit'natakum hādhā alladhī kuntum bihi tastaʿjilūn

إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ فِی جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُیُونٍ ۝١٥

The righteous will be in Gardens with [flowing] springs

inna l-mutaqīna fī jannātin waʿuyūni

ءَاخِذِینَ مَاۤ ءَاتَىٰهُمۡ رَبُّهُمۡۚ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ قَبۡلَ ذَ ٰلِكَ مُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٦

They will receive their Lord’s gifts because of the good they did before

ākhidhīna mā ātāhum rabbuhum innahum kānū qabla dhālika muḥ'sinīn

كَانُوا۟ قَلِیلࣰا مِّنَ ٱلَّیۡلِ مَا یَهۡجَعُونَ ۝١٧

sleeping only little at night

kānū qalīlan mina al-layli mā yahjaʿūn

وَبِٱلۡأَسۡحَارِ هُمۡ یَسۡتَغۡفِرُونَ ۝١٨

praying at dawn for God’s forgiveness

wabil-asḥāri hum yastaghfirūn

وَفِیۤ أَمۡوَ ٰلِهِمۡ حَقࣱّ لِّلسَّاۤىِٕلِ وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ ۝١٩

giving a rightful share of their wealth to the beggar and the deprived

wafī amwālihim ḥaqqun lilssāili wal-maḥrūm

وَفِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ ءَایَـٰتࣱ لِّلۡمُوقِنِینَ ۝٢٠

On earth there are signs for those with sure faith––

wafī l-arḍi āyātun lil'mūqinīn

وَفِیۤ أَنفُسِكُمۡۚ أَفَلَا تُبۡصِرُونَ ۝٢١

and in yourselves too, do you not see?––

wafī anfusikum afalā tub'ṣirūn

وَفِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ رِزۡقُكُمۡ وَمَا تُوعَدُونَ ۝٢٢

in the sky is your sustenance and all that you are promised

wafī l-samāi riz'qukum wamā tūʿadūn

فَوَرَبِّ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِنَّهُۥ لَحَقࣱّ مِّثۡلَ مَاۤ أَنَّكُمۡ تَنطِقُونَ ۝٢٣

By the Lord of the heavens and earth! All this is as real as your speaking

fawarabbi l-samāi wal-arḍi innahu laḥaqqun mith'la mā annakum tanṭiqūn

2 Fate of Previous Nations

هَلۡ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِیثُ ضَیۡفِ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ ٱلۡمُكۡرَمِینَ ۝٢٤

[Muhammad], have you heard the story of the honoured guests of Abraham

hal atāka ḥadīthu ḍayfi ib'rāhīma l-muk'ramīn

إِذۡ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَیۡهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمࣰاۖ قَالَ سَلَـٰمࣱ قَوۡمࣱ مُّنكَرُونَ ۝٢٥

They went in to see him and said, ‘Peace.’ ‘Peace,’ he said, [adding to himself] ‘These people are strangers.’

idh dakhalū ʿalayhi faqālū salāman qāla salāmun qawmun munkarūn

فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰۤ أَهۡلِهِۦ فَجَاۤءَ بِعِجۡلࣲ سَمِینࣲ ۝٢٦

He turned quickly to his household, brought out a fat calf

farāgha ilā ahlihi fajāa biʿij'lin samīni

فَقَرَّبَهُۥۤ إِلَیۡهِمۡ قَالَ أَلَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ۝٢٧

and placed it before them. ‘Will you not eat?’ he said

faqarrabahu ilayhim qāla alā takulūn

فَأَوۡجَسَ مِنۡهُمۡ خِیفَةࣰۖ قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفۡۖ وَبَشَّرُوهُ بِغُلَـٰمٍ عَلِیمࣲ ۝٢٨

beginning to be afraid of them, but they said, ‘Do not be afraid.’ They gave him good news of a son who would be gifted with knowledge

fa-awjasa min'hum khīfatan qālū lā takhaf wabasharūhu bighulāmin ʿalīmi

فَأَقۡبَلَتِ ٱمۡرَأَتُهُۥ فِی صَرَّةࣲ فَصَكَّتۡ وَجۡهَهَا وَقَالَتۡ عَجُوزٌ عَقِیمࣱ ۝٢٩

His wife then entered with a loud cry, struck her face, and said, ‘A barren old woman?’

fa-aqbalati im'ra-atuhu fī ṣarratin faṣakkat wajhahā waqālat ʿajūzun ʿaqīmu

قَالُوا۟ كَذَ ٰلِكِ قَالَ رَبُّكِۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٣٠

but they said, ‘It will be so. This is what your Lord said, and He is the Wise, the All Knowing.’

qālū kadhāliki qāla rabbuki innahu huwa l-ḥakīmu l-ʿalīm

۞ قَالَ فَمَا خَطۡبُكُمۡ أَیُّهَا ٱلۡمُرۡسَلُونَ ۝٣١

Abraham said, ‘What is your errand, messengers?’

qāla famā khaṭbukum ayyuhā l-mur'salūn

قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّاۤ أُرۡسِلۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ قَوۡمࣲ مُّجۡرِمِینَ ۝٣٢

They said, ‘We are sent to a people lost in sin

qālū innā ur'sil'nā ilā qawmin muj'rimīn

لِنُرۡسِلَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ حِجَارَةࣰ مِّن طِینࣲ ۝٣٣

to bring down rocks of clay

linur'sila ʿalayhim ḥijāratan min ṭīni

مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلۡمُسۡرِفِینَ ۝٣٤

marked by your Lord for those who exceed all bounds.’

musawwamatan ʿinda rabbika lil'mus'rifīn

فَأَخۡرَجۡنَا مَن كَانَ فِیهَا مِنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٣٥

We brought out such believers as were there

fa-akhrajnā man kāna fīhā mina l-mu'minīn

فَمَا وَجَدۡنَا فِیهَا غَیۡرَ بَیۡتࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِینَ ۝٣٦

We found only one household devoted to God

famā wajadnā fīhā ghayra baytin mina l-mus'limīn

وَتَرَكۡنَا فِیهَاۤ ءَایَةࣰ لِّلَّذِینَ یَخَافُونَ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِیمَ ۝٣٧

and left the town to be a sign for those who fear the painful punishment

wataraknā fīhā āyatan lilladhīna yakhāfūna l-ʿadhāba l-alīm

وَفِی مُوسَىٰۤ إِذۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ بِسُلۡطَـٰنࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝٣٨

There is another sign in Moses: We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority

wafī mūsā idh arsalnāhu ilā fir'ʿawna bisul'ṭānin mubīni

فَتَوَلَّىٰ بِرُكۡنِهِۦ وَقَالَ سَـٰحِرٌ أَوۡ مَجۡنُونࣱ ۝٣٩

Pharaoh turned away with his supporters, saying, ‘This is a sorcerer, or maybe a madman,’

fatawallā biruk'nihi waqāla sāḥirun aw majnūnu

فَأَخَذۡنَـٰهُ وَجُنُودَهُۥ فَنَبَذۡنَـٰهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡیَمِّ وَهُوَ مُلِیمࣱ ۝٤٠

so We seized him and his forces and threw them into the sea: he was to blame

fa-akhadhnāhu wajunūdahu fanabadhnāhum fī l-yami wahuwa mulīmu

وَفِی عَادٍ إِذۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلرِّیحَ ٱلۡعَقِیمَ ۝٤١

There is another sign in the Ad: We sent the life-destroying wind against the

wafī ʿādin idh arsalnā ʿalayhimu l-rīḥa l-ʿaqīm

مَا تَذَرُ مِن شَیۡءٍ أَتَتۡ عَلَیۡهِ إِلَّا جَعَلَتۡهُ كَٱلرَّمِیمِ ۝٤٢

and it reduced everything it came up against to shreds

mā tadharu min shayin atat ʿalayhi illā jaʿalathu kal-ramīm

وَفِی ثَمُودَ إِذۡ قِیلَ لَهُمۡ تَمَتَّعُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ حِینࣲ ۝٤٣

And also in the Thamud: it was said to them, ‘Make the most of your lives for a while,’

wafī thamūda idh qīla lahum tamattaʿū ḥattā ḥīni

فَعَتَوۡا۟ عَنۡ أَمۡرِ رَبِّهِمۡ فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُ وَهُمۡ یَنظُرُونَ ۝٤٤

but they rebelled against their Lord’s command, so the blast took them. They looked on helplessly

faʿataw ʿan amri rabbihim fa-akhadhathumu l-ṣāʿiqatu wahum yanẓurūn

فَمَا ٱسۡتَطَـٰعُوا۟ مِن قِیَامࣲ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُنتَصِرِینَ ۝٤٥

they could not even remain standing, let alone defend themselves

famā is'taṭāʿū min qiyāmin wamā kānū muntaṣirīn

وَقَوۡمَ نُوحࣲ مِّن قَبۡلُۖ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ قَوۡمࣰا فَـٰسِقِینَ ۝٤٦

Before that We destroyed the people of Noah. They were a truly sinful people

waqawma nūḥin min qablu innahum kānū qawman fāsiqīn

3 Judgment is sure

وَٱلسَّمَاۤءَ بَنَیۡنَـٰهَا بِأَیۡی۟دࣲ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ ۝٤٧

We built the heavens with Our power and made them vast

wal-samāa banaynāhā bi-aydin wa-innā lamūsiʿūn

وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ فَرَشۡنَـٰهَا فَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡمَـٰهِدُونَ ۝٤٨

We spread out the earth- how well We smoothed it out!

wal-arḍa farashnāhā faniʿ'ma l-māhidūn

وَمِن كُلِّ شَیۡءٍ خَلَقۡنَا زَوۡجَیۡنِ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٤٩

and We created pairs of all things so that you [people] might take note

wamin kulli shayin khalaqnā zawjayni laʿallakum tadhakkarūn

فَفِرُّوۤا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِۖ إِنِّی لَكُم مِّنۡهُ نَذِیرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٥٠

[So, say to them, Prophet], ‘Quickly, turn to God- I am sent by Him to give you clear warning

fafirrū ilā l-lahi innī lakum min'hu nadhīrun mubīnu

وَلَا تَجۡعَلُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَۖ إِنِّی لَكُم مِّنۡهُ نَذِیرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٥١

and do not set up any other god alongside Him. I am sent by Him to give you clear warning!’

walā tajʿalū maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara innī lakum min'hu nadhīrun mubīnu

كَذَ ٰلِكَ مَاۤ أَتَى ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا قَالُوا۟ سَاحِرٌ أَوۡ مَجۡنُونٌ ۝٥٢

Every previous people to whom a messenger was sent also said, ‘A sor-cerer, or maybe a madman!’

kadhālika mā atā alladhīna min qablihim min rasūlin illā qālū sāḥirun aw majnūnu

أَتَوَاصَوۡا۟ بِهِۦۚ بَلۡ هُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ طَاغُونَ ۝٥٣

Did they tell one another to do this? No! They are a people who exceed all bounds

atawāṣaw bihi bal hum qawmun ṭāghūn

فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ فَمَاۤ أَنتَ بِمَلُومࣲ ۝٥٤

so ignore them [Prophet]- you are not to blame

fatawalla ʿanhum famā anta bimalūmi

وَذَكِّرۡ فَإِنَّ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ تَنفَعُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٥٥

and go on reminding [people], it is good for those who believe to be reminded

wadhakkir fa-inna l-dhik'rā tanfaʿu l-mu'minīn

وَمَا خَلَقۡتُ ٱلۡجِنَّ وَٱلۡإِنسَ إِلَّا لِیَعۡبُدُونِ ۝٥٦

I created jinn and mankind only to worship Me

wamā khalaqtu l-jina wal-insa illā liyaʿbudūn

مَاۤ أُرِیدُ مِنۡهُم مِّن رِّزۡقࣲ وَمَاۤ أُرِیدُ أَن یُطۡعِمُونِ ۝٥٧

I want no provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me

mā urīdu min'hum min riz'qin wamā urīdu an yuṭ'ʿimūn

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلرَّزَّاقُ ذُو ٱلۡقُوَّةِ ٱلۡمَتِینُ ۝٥٨

God is the Provider, the Lord of Power, the Ever Mighty

inna l-laha huwa l-razāqu dhū l-quwati l-matīn

فَإِنَّ لِلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ذَنُوبࣰا مِّثۡلَ ذَنُوبِ أَصۡحَـٰبِهِمۡ فَلَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونِ ۝٥٩

The evildoers, like their predecessors, will have a share of punishment- they need not ask Me to hasten it

fa-inna lilladhīna ẓalamū dhanūban mith'la dhanūbi aṣḥābihim falā yastaʿjilūn

فَوَیۡلࣱ لِّلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن یَوۡمِهِمُ ٱلَّذِی یُوعَدُونَ ۝٦٠

and woe betide those who deny the truth on the Day they have been promised

fawaylun lilladhīna kafarū min yawmihimu alladhī yūʿadūn
