Hud 11:18 Verb
وَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًاۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ یُعۡرَضُونَ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ وَیَقُولُ ٱلۡأَشۡهَـٰدُ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَبُوا۟ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡۚ أَلَا لَعۡنَةُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَى ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And who is more unjust than he who invents a lie about Allah ? Those will be presented before their Lord, and the witnesses will say, "These are the ones who lied against their Lord." Unquestionably, the curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers
Abdel Haleem: Who could do more wrong than someone who invents lies about God? Such people will be brought before their Lord, and the witnesses will say, ‘These are the ones that lied about their Lord.’ God’s rejection is the due of those who do such wrong
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Who doeth greater wrong than he who inventeth a lie concerning Allah? Such will be brought before their Lord, and the witnesses will say: These are they who lied concerning their Lord. Now the curse of Allah is upon wrong-doers
Hud 11:76 Verb
یَـٰۤإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمُ أَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡ هَـٰذَاۤۖ إِنَّهُۥ قَدۡ جَاۤءَ أَمۡرُ رَبِّكَۖ وَإِنَّهُمۡ ءَاتِیهِمۡ عَذَابٌ غَیۡرُ مَرۡدُودࣲ ۝٧٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): [The angels said], "O Abraham, give up this [plea]. Indeed, the command of your Lord has come, and indeed, there will reach them a punishment that cannot be repelled."
Abdel Haleem: ‘Abraham, cease your pleading: what your Lord has ordained has come about; punishment is coming to them, which cannot be turned back.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: (It was said) O Abraham! Forsake this! Lo! thy Lord's commandment hath gone forth, and lo! there cometh unto them a doom which cannot be repelled
Joseph 12:29 Verb
یُوسُفُ أَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡ هَـٰذَاۚ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرِی لِذَنۢبِكِۖ إِنَّكِ كُنتِ مِنَ ٱلۡخَاطِءِینَ ۝٢٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Joseph, ignore this. And, [my wife], ask forgiveness for your sin. Indeed, you were of the sinful."
Abdel Haleem: Joseph, overlook this; but you [wife], ask forgiveness for your sin- you have done wrong.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: O Joseph! Turn away from this, and thou, (O woman), ask forgiveness for thy sin. Lo! thou art of the faulty
The Rock, Stoneland, Rock City 15:94 Verb
فَٱصۡدَعۡ بِمَا تُؤۡمَرُ وَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنِ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝٩٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Then declare what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists
Abdel Haleem: So proclaim openly what you have been commanded [to say], and ignore the idolaters
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: So proclaim that which thou art commanded, and withdraw from the idolaters
Children of Israel, The Israelites 17:28 Verb
وَإِمَّا تُعۡرِضَنَّ عَنۡهُمُ ٱبۡتِغَاۤءَ رَحۡمَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّكَ تَرۡجُوهَا فَقُل لَّهُمۡ قَوۡلࣰا مَّیۡسُورࣰا ۝٢٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And if you [must] turn away from the needy awaiting mercy from your Lord which you expect, then speak to them a gentle word
Abdel Haleem: but if, while seeking some bounty that you expect from your Lord, you turn them down, then at least speak some word of comfort to them
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: But if thou turn away from them, seeking mercy from thy Lord, for which thou hopest, then speak unto them a reasonable word
Children of Israel, The Israelites 17:67 Verb
وَإِذَا مَسَّكُمُ ٱلضُّرُّ فِی ٱلۡبَحۡرِ ضَلَّ مَن تَدۡعُونَ إِلَّاۤ إِیَّاهُۖ فَلَمَّا نَجَّىٰكُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡبَرِّ أَعۡرَضۡتُمۡۚ وَكَانَ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ كَفُورًا ۝٦٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when adversity touches you at sea, lost are [all] those you invoke except for Him. But when He delivers you to the land, you turn away [from Him]. And ever is man ungrateful
Abdel Haleem: When you get into distress at sea, those you pray to besides Him desert you, but when He brings you back safe to land you turn away: man is ever ungrateful
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And when harm toucheth you upon the sea, all unto whom ye cry (for succour) fail save Him (alone), but when He bringeth you safe to land, ye turn away, for man was ever thankless
Children of Israel, The Israelites 17:83 Verb
وَإِذَاۤ أَنۡعَمۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنِ أَعۡرَضَ وَنَءَا بِجَانِبِهِۦ وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ كَانَ یَءُوسࣰا ۝٨٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when We bestow favor upon the disbeliever, he turns away and distances himself; and when evil touches him, he is ever despairing
Abdel Haleem: When We favour man he turns arrogantly to one side, but when harm touches him, he falls into despair
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And when We make life pleasant unto man, he turneth away and is averse; and when ill toucheth him he is in despair
The Cave 18:100 Verb
وَعَرَضۡنَا جَهَنَّمَ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لِّلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَرۡضًا ۝١٠٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And We will present Hell that Day to the Disbelievers, on display
Abdel Haleem: We shall show Hell to the disbelievers
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: On that day we shall present hell to the disbelievers, plain to view
The Cave 18:48 Verb
وَعُرِضُوا۟ عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ صَفࣰّا لَّقَدۡ جِئۡتُمُونَا كَمَا خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةِۭۚ بَلۡ زَعَمۡتُمۡ أَلَّن نَّجۡعَلَ لَكُم مَّوۡعِدࣰا ۝٤٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And they will be presented before your Lord in rows, [and He will say], "You have certainly come to Us just as We created you the first time. But you claimed that We would never make for you an appointment."
Abdel Haleem: They will be lined up before your Lord: ‘Now you have come to Us as We first created you, although you claimed We had not made any such appointment for you.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And they are set before thy Lord in ranks (and it is said unto them): Now verily have ye come unto Us as We created you at the first. But ye thought that We had set no tryst for you
The Cave 18:57 Verb
وَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّن ذُكِّرَ بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِۦ فَأَعۡرَضَ عَنۡهَا وَنَسِیَ مَا قَدَّمَتۡ یَدَاهُۚ إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ أَكِنَّةً أَن یَفۡقَهُوهُ وَفِیۤ ءَاذَانِهِمۡ وَقۡرࣰاۖ وَإِن تَدۡعُهُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰ فَلَن یَهۡتَدُوۤا۟ إِذًا أَبَدࣰا ۝٥٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord but turns away from them and forgets what his hands have put forth? Indeed, We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And if you invite them to guidance - they will never be guided, then - ever
Abdel Haleem: Who could be more wrong than the person who is reminded of his Lord’s messages and turns his back on them, ignoring what his hands are storing up for him [in the Hereafter]? We have put covers over their hearts, so they cannot understand the Quran, and We put heaviness in their ears: although you call them to guidance [Prophet] they will never accept it
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And who doth greater wrong than he who hath been reminded of the revelations of his Lord, yet turneth away from them and forgetteth what his hands send forward (to the Judgment)? Lo! on their hearts We have placed coverings so that they understand not, and in their ears a deafness. And though thou call them to the guidance, in that case they can never be led aright
Ta Ha 20:100 Verb
مَّنۡ أَعۡرَضَ عَنۡهُ فَإِنَّهُۥ یَحۡمِلُ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ وِزۡرًا ۝١٠٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Whoever turns away from it - then indeed, he will bear on the Day of Resurrection a burden
Abdel Haleem: Whoever turns away from it will bear on the Day of Resurrection a heavy burde
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Whoso turneth away from it, he verily will bear a burden on the Day of Resurrection
Ta Ha 20:124 Verb
وَمَنۡ أَعۡرَضَ عَن ذِكۡرِی فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ مَعِیشَةࣰ ضَنكࣰا وَنَحۡشُرُهُۥ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ أَعۡمَىٰ ۝١٢٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind."
Abdel Haleem: but whoever turns away from it will have a life of great hardship. We shall bring him blind to the Assembly on the Day of Resurrectio
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: But he who turneth away from remembrance of Me, his will be a narrow life, and I shall bring him blind to the assembly on the Day of Resurrection
The Story, Stories, The Narrative 28:55 Verb
وَإِذَا سَمِعُوا۟ ٱللَّغۡوَ أَعۡرَضُوا۟ عَنۡهُ وَقَالُوا۟ لَنَاۤ أَعۡمَـٰلُنَا وَلَكُمۡ أَعۡمَـٰلُكُمۡ سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَیۡكُمۡ لَا نَبۡتَغِی ٱلۡجَـٰهِلِینَ ۝٥٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, "For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant."
Abdel Haleem: and turn away whenever they hear frivolous talk, saying, ‘We have our deeds and you have yours. Peace be with you! We do not seek the company of ignorant people.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And when they hear vanity they withdraw from it and say: Unto us our works and unto you your works. Peace be unto you! We desire not the ignorant
The Cow 2:235 Verb
وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ فِیمَا عَرَّضۡتُم بِهِۦ مِنۡ خِطۡبَةِ ٱلنِّسَاۤءِ أَوۡ أَكۡنَنتُمۡ فِیۤ أَنفُسِكُمۡۚ عَلِمَ ٱللَّهُ أَنَّكُمۡ سَتَذۡكُرُونَهُنَّ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُوَاعِدُوهُنَّ سِرًّا إِلَّاۤ أَن تَقُولُوا۟ قَوۡلࣰا مَّعۡرُوفࣰاۚ وَلَا تَعۡزِمُوا۟ عُقۡدَةَ ٱلنِّكَاحِ حَتَّىٰ یَبۡلُغَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبُ أَجَلَهُۥۚ وَٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَعۡلَمُ مَا فِیۤ أَنفُسِكُمۡ فَٱحۡذَرُوهُۚ وَٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ حَلِیمࣱ ۝٢٣٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): There is no blame upon you for that to which you [indirectly] allude concerning a proposal to women or for what you conceal within yourselves. Allah knows that you will have them in mind. But do not promise them secretly except for saying a proper saying. And do not determine to undertake a marriage contract until the decreed period reaches its end. And know that Allah knows what is within yourselves, so beware of Him. And know that Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing
Abdel Haleem: You will not be blamed whether you give a hint that you wish to marry these women, or keep it to yourselves- God knows that you intend to propose to them. Do not make a secret arrangement with them; speak to them honourably and do not confirm the marriage tie until the prescribed period reaches its end. Remember that God knows what is in your souls, so be mindful of Him. Remember that God is most forgiving and forbearing
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: There is no sin for you in that which ye proclaim or hide in your minds concerning your troth with women. Allah knoweth that ye will remember them. But plight not your troth with women except by uttering a recognised form of words. And do not consummate the marriage until (the term) prescribed is run. Know that Allah knoweth what is in your minds, so beware of Him; and know that Allah is Forgiving, Clement
The Cow 2:31 Verb
وَعَلَّمَ ءَادَمَ ٱلۡأَسۡمَاۤءَ كُلَّهَا ثُمَّ عَرَضَهُمۡ عَلَى ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ فَقَالَ أَنۢبِءُونِی بِأَسۡمَاۤءِ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝٣١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And He taught Adam the names - all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said, "Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful."
Abdel Haleem: He taught Adam all the names [of things], then He showed them to the angels and said, ‘Tell me the names of these if you truly [think you can].’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And He taught Adam all the names, then showed them to the angels, saying: Inform Me of the names of these, if ye are truthful
The Prostration, Worship, Adoration, The Adoration 32:22 Verb
وَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّن ذُكِّرَ بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِۦ ثُمَّ أَعۡرَضَ عَنۡهَاۤۚ إِنَّا مِنَ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ مُنتَقِمُونَ ۝٢٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord; then he turns away from them? Indeed We, from the criminals, will take retribution
Abdel Haleem: Who does more wrong than someone who, when messages from his Lord are recited to him, turns away from them? We shall inflict retribution on the guilty
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And who doth greater wrong than he who is reminded of the revelations of his Lord, then turneth from them. Lo! We shall requite the guilty
The Prostration, Worship, Adoration, The Adoration 32:30 Verb
فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡ وَٱنتَظِرۡ إِنَّهُم مُّنتَظِرُونَ ۝٣٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): So turn away from them and wait. Indeed, they are waiting
Abdel Haleem: So [Prophet], turn away from them and wait: they too are waiting
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: So withdraw from them (O Muhammad), and await (the event). Lo! they (also) are awaiting (it)

إِنَّا عَرَضۡنَا ٱلۡأَمَانَةَ عَلَى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَٱلۡجِبَالِ فَأَبَیۡنَ أَن یَحۡمِلۡنَهَا وَأَشۡفَقۡنَ مِنۡهَا وَحَمَلَهَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ ظَلُومࣰا جَهُولࣰا ۝٧٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Indeed, we offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant
Abdel Haleem: We offered the Trust to the heavens, the earth, and the mountains, yet they refused to undertake it and were afraid of it; mankind undertook it- they have always been inept and foolish
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Lo! We offered the trust unto the heavens and the earth and the hills, but they shrank from bearing it and were afraid of it. And man assumed it. Lo! he hath proved a tyrant and a fool
Saba, Sheba 34:16 Verb
فَأَعۡرَضُوا۟ فَأَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ سَیۡلَ ٱلۡعَرِمِ وَبَدَّلۡنَـٰهُم بِجَنَّتَیۡهِمۡ جَنَّتَیۡنِ ذَوَاتَیۡ أُكُلٍ خَمۡطࣲ وَأَثۡلࣲ وَشَیۡءࣲ مِّن سِدۡرࣲ قَلِیلࣲ ۝١٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): But they turned away [refusing], so We sent upon them the flood of the dam, and We replaced their two [fields of] gardens with gardens of bitter fruit, tamarisks and something of sparse lote trees
Abdel Haleem: But they paid no heed, so We let loose on them a flood from the dam and replaced their two gardens with others that yielded bitter fruit, tamarisk bushes, and a few lote trees
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: But they were froward, so We sent on them the flood of 'Iram, and in exchange for their two gardens gave them two gardens bearing bitter fruit, the tamarisk and here and there a lote-tree
The Letter Sad 38:31 Verb
إِذۡ عُرِضَ عَلَیۡهِ بِٱلۡعَشِیِّ ٱلصَّـٰفِنَـٰتُ ٱلۡجِیَادُ ۝٣١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): [Mention] when there were exhibited before him in the afternoon the poised [standing] racehorses
Abdel Haleem: When well-bred light-footed horses were paraded before him near the close of day
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: When there were shown to him at eventide lightfooted courser
The Forgiver, The Forgiving One 40:46 Verb
ٱلنَّارُ یُعۡرَضُونَ عَلَیۡهَا غُدُوࣰّا وَعَشِیࣰّاۚ وَیَوۡمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدۡخِلُوۤا۟ ءَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ أَشَدَّ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ۝٤٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment."
Abdel Haleem: they will be brought before the Fire morning and evening. On the Day the Hour comes, it will be said, ‘Throw Pharaoh’s people into the worst torment.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: The Fire; they are exposed to it morning and evening; and on the day when the Hour upriseth (it is said): Cause Pharaoh's folk to enter the most awful doom
Explained in Detail, Revelations Well Expounded 41:13 Verb
فَإِنۡ أَعۡرَضُوا۟ فَقُلۡ أَنذَرۡتُكُمۡ صَـٰعِقَةࣰ مِّثۡلَ صَـٰعِقَةِ عَادࣲ وَثَمُودَ ۝١٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): But if they turn away, then say, "I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt [that struck] 'Aad and Thamud
Abdel Haleem: If they turn away, say, ‘I have warned you about a blast like the one which struck 'Ad and Thamud
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: But if they turn away, then say: I warn you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt (which fell of old upon the tribes) of A'ad and Thamud

بَشِیرࣰا وَنَذِیرࣰا فَأَعۡرَضَ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ فَهُمۡ لَا یَسۡمَعُونَ ۝٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): As a giver of good tidings and a warner; but most of them turn away, so they do not hear
Abdel Haleem: giving good news and warning. Yet most of them turn away and so do not hear
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Good tidings and a warning. But most of them turn away so that they hear not

وَإِذَاۤ أَنۡعَمۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنِ أَعۡرَضَ وَنَءَا بِجَانِبِهِۦ وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ فَذُو دُعَاۤءٍ عَرِیضࣲ ۝٥١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when We bestow favor upon man, he turns away and distances himself; but when evil touches him, then he is full of extensive supplication
Abdel Haleem: Whenever We are gracious to man, he goes away haughtily, but, as soon as evil touches him, he turns to prolonged prayer
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: When We show favour unto man, he withdraweth and turneth aside, but when ill toucheth him then he aboundeth in prayer
Council, Consultation, The Counsel 42:45 Verb
وَتَرَىٰهُمۡ یُعۡرَضُونَ عَلَیۡهَا خَـٰشِعِینَ مِنَ ٱلذُّلِّ یَنظُرُونَ مِن طَرۡفٍ خَفِیࣲّۗ وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِنَّ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِینَ ٱلَّذِینَ خَسِرُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَأَهۡلِیهِمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۗ أَلَاۤ إِنَّ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ فِی عَذَابࣲ مُّقِیمࣲ ۝٤٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And you will see them being exposed to the Fire, humbled from humiliation, looking from [behind] a covert glance. And those who had believed will say, "Indeed, the [true] losers are the ones who lost themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Unquestionably, the wrongdoers are in an enduring punishment."
Abdel Haleem: You will see them exposed to the Fire, abject in humiliation, glancing furtively, while those who believed exclaim, ‘The losers are the ones who have lost themselves and their people on the Day of Resurrection.’ Truly the evildoers will remain in lasting torment
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And thou wilt see them exposed to (the Fire), made humble by disgrace, and looking with veiled eyes. And those who believe will say: Lo! the (eternal) losers are they who lose themselves and their housefolk on the Day of Resurrection. Lo! are not the wrong-doers in perpetual torment
Council, Consultation, The Counsel 42:48 Verb
فَإِنۡ أَعۡرَضُوا۟ فَمَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَـٰكَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ حَفِیظًاۖ إِنۡ عَلَیۡكَ إِلَّا ٱلۡبَلَـٰغُۗ وَإِنَّاۤ إِذَاۤ أَذَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِنَّا رَحۡمَةࣰ فَرِحَ بِهَاۖ وَإِن تُصِبۡهُمۡ سَیِّئَةُۢ بِمَا قَدَّمَتۡ أَیۡدِیهِمۡ فَإِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ كَفُورࣱ ۝٤٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): But if they turn away - then We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], over them as a guardian; upon you is only [the duty of] notification. And indeed, when We let man taste mercy from us, he rejoices in it; but if evil afflicts him for what his hands have put forth, then indeed, man is ungrateful
Abdel Haleem: We have not sent you [Prophet] to be their guardian: your only duty is to deliver the message. When We give man a taste of Our mercy, he rejoices in it, but if some harm befalls him on account of what he has done with his own hands, then he is ungrateful
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: But if they are averse, We have not sent thee as a warder over them. Thine is only to convey (the message). And lo! when We cause man to taste of mercy from Us he exulteth therefor. And if some evil striketh them because of that which their own hands have sent before, then lo! man is an ingrate
The Wind-curved Sandhills, The Dunes, The Sandhills 46:20 Verb
وَیَوۡمَ یُعۡرَضُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ أَذۡهَبۡتُمۡ طَیِّبَـٰتِكُمۡ فِی حَیَاتِكُمُ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَٱسۡتَمۡتَعۡتُم بِهَا فَٱلۡیَوۡمَ تُجۡزَوۡنَ عَذَابَ ٱلۡهُونِ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ بِغَیۡرِ ٱلۡحَقِّ وَبِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَفۡسُقُونَ ۝٢٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], "You exhausted your pleasures during your worldly life and enjoyed them, so this Day you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation because you were arrogant upon the earth without right and because you were defiantly disobedient."
Abdel Haleem: On the Day when those who deny the truth are brought before the Fire, it will be said to them, ‘You squandered the good things you were given in your earthly life, you took your fill of pleasure there, so on this Day a punishment of shame is yours: you were arrogant on earth without any right, and exceeded all limits.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And on the day when those who disbelieve are exposed to the Fire (it will be said): Ye squandered your good things in the life of the world and sought comfort therein. Now this day ye are rewarded with the doom of ignominy because ye were disdainful in the land without a right, and because ye used to transgress
The Wind-curved Sandhills, The Dunes, The Sandhills 46:34 Verb
وَیَوۡمَ یُعۡرَضُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ أَلَیۡسَ هَـٰذَا بِٱلۡحَقِّۖ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ وَرَبِّنَاۚ قَالَ فَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡفُرُونَ ۝٣٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], "Is this not the truth?" They will say, "Yes, by our Lord." He will say, "Then taste the punishment because you used to disbelieve."
Abdel Haleem: On the Day the disbelievers are brought before Hell [it will be said to them], ‘Is this not real?’ ‘Yes, by our Lord,’ they will reply and He will say, ‘Then taste the punishment for having denied the truth.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And on the day when those who disbelieve are exposed to the Fire (they will be asked): Is not this real? They will say: Yea, by our Lord. He will say: Then taste the doom for that ye disbelieved
Women 4:135 Verb
۞ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ كُونُوا۟ قَوَّ ٰمِینَ بِٱلۡقِسۡطِ شُهَدَاۤءَ لِلَّهِ وَلَوۡ عَلَىٰۤ أَنفُسِكُمۡ أَوِ ٱلۡوَ ٰلِدَیۡنِ وَٱلۡأَقۡرَبِینَۚ إِن یَكُنۡ غَنِیًّا أَوۡ فَقِیرࣰا فَٱللَّهُ أَوۡلَىٰ بِهِمَاۖ فَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا۟ ٱلۡهَوَىٰۤ أَن تَعۡدِلُوا۟ۚ وَإِن تَلۡوُۥۤا۟ أَوۡ تُعۡرِضُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣰا ۝١٣٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah , even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted
Abdel Haleem: You who believe, uphold justice and bear witness to God, even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or your close relatives. Whether the person is rich or poor, God can best take care of both. Refrain from following your own desire, so that you can act justly- if you distort or neglect justice, God is fully aware of what you do
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: O ye who believe! Be ye staunch in justice, witnesses for Allah, even though it be against yourselves or (your) parents or (your) kindred, whether (the case be of) a rich man or a poor man, for Allah is nearer unto both (them ye are). So follow not passion lest ye lapse (from truth) and if ye lapse or fall away, then lo! Allah is ever Informed of what ye do
Women 4:16 Verb
وَٱلَّذَانِ یَأۡتِیَـٰنِهَا مِنكُمۡ فَءَاذُوهُمَاۖ فَإِن تَابَا وَأَصۡلَحَا فَأَعۡرِضُوا۟ عَنۡهُمَاۤۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ تَوَّابࣰا رَّحِیمًا ۝١٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And the two who commit it among you, dishonor them both. But if they repent and correct themselves, leave them alone. Indeed, Allah is ever Accepting of repentance and Merciful
Abdel Haleem: If two men commit a lewd act, punish them both; if they repent and mend their ways, leave them alone- God is always ready to accept repentance, He is full of mercy
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And as for the two of you who are guilty thereof, punish them both. And if they repent and improve, then let them be. Lo! Allah is ever relenting, Merciful
Women 4:63 Verb
أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ یَعۡلَمُ ٱللَّهُ مَا فِی قُلُوبِهِمۡ فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡ وَعِظۡهُمۡ وَقُل لَّهُمۡ فِیۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ قَوۡلَۢا بَلِیغࣰا ۝٦٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Those are the ones of whom Allah knows what is in their hearts, so turn away from them but admonish them and speak to them a far-reaching word
Abdel Haleem: God knows well what is in the hearts of these people, so ignore what they say, instruct them, and speak to them about themselves using penetrating words
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Those are they, the secrets of whose hearts Allah knoweth. So oppose them and admonish them, and address them in plain terms about their souls
Women 4:81 Verb
وَیَقُولُونَ طَاعَةࣱ فَإِذَا بَرَزُوا۟ مِنۡ عِندِكَ بَیَّتَ طَاۤىِٕفَةࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ غَیۡرَ ٱلَّذِی تَقُولُۖ وَٱللَّهُ یَكۡتُبُ مَا یُبَیِّتُونَۖ فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡ وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱللَّهِۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ وَكِیلًا ۝٨١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And they say, "[We pledge] obedience." But when they leave you, a group of them spend the night determining to do other than what you say. But Allah records what they plan by night. So leave them alone and rely upon Allah . And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs
Abdel Haleem: They say, ‘We obey you,’ but as soon as they leave your presence, some of them scheme by night to do other than what you said. God records what they scheme, so leave them alone, and put your trust in God: He is sufficient protector
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And they say: (It is) obedience; but when they have gone forth from thee a party of them spend the night in planning other than what thou sayest. Allah recordeth what they plan by night. So oppose them and put thy trust in Allah. Allah is sufficient as Trustee
The Star 53:29 Verb
فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكۡرِنَا وَلَمۡ یُرِدۡ إِلَّا ٱلۡحَیَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا ۝٢٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): So turn away from whoever turns his back on Our message and desires not except the worldly life
Abdel Haleem: So [Prophet] ignore those who turn away from Our revelation, who want only the life of this world
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Then withdraw (O Muhammad) from him who fleeth from Our remembrance and desireth but the life of the world
The Moon 54:2 Verb
وَإِن یَرَوۡا۟ ءَایَةࣰ یُعۡرِضُوا۟ وَیَقُولُوا۟ سِحۡرࣱ مُّسۡتَمِرࣱّ ۝٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And if they see a miracle, they turn away and say, "Passing magic."
Abdel Haleem: Whenever the disbelievers see a sign, they turn away and say, ‘Same old sorcery!’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And if they behold a portent they turn away and say: Prolonged illusion
The Table, The Table Spread 5:42 Verb
سَمَّـٰعُونَ لِلۡكَذِبِ أَكَّـٰلُونَ لِلسُّحۡتِۚ فَإِن جَاۤءُوكَ فَٱحۡكُم بَیۡنَهُمۡ أَوۡ أَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡۖ وَإِن تُعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡ فَلَن یَضُرُّوكَ شَیۡءࣰاۖ وَإِنۡ حَكَمۡتَ فَٱحۡكُم بَیۡنَهُم بِٱلۡقِسۡطِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُقۡسِطِینَ ۝٤٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): [They are] avid listeners to falsehood, devourers of [what is] unlawful. So if they come to you, [O Muhammad], judge between them or turn away from them. And if you turn away from them - never will they harm you at all. And if you judge, judge between them with justice. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly
Abdel Haleem: they listen eagerly to lies and consume what is unlawful. If they come to you [Prophet] for judgement, you can either judge between them, or decline- if you decline, they will not harm you in any way, but if you do judge between them, judge justly: God loves the just
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Listeners for the sake of falsehood! Greedy for illicit gain! If then they have recourse unto thee (Muhammad) judge between them or disclaim jurisdiction. If thou disclaimest jurisdiction, then they cannot harm thee at all. But if thou judgest, judge between them with equity. Lo! Allah loveth the equitable
Banning, Prohibition 66:3 Verb
وَإِذۡ أَسَرَّ ٱلنَّبِیُّ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضِ أَزۡوَ ٰجِهِۦ حَدِیثࣰا فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَتۡ بِهِۦ وَأَظۡهَرَهُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهِ عَرَّفَ بَعۡضَهُۥ وَأَعۡرَضَ عَنۢ بَعۡضࣲۖ فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَهَا بِهِۦ قَالَتۡ مَنۡ أَنۢبَأَكَ هَـٰذَاۖ قَالَ نَبَّأَنِیَ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ٱلۡخَبِیرُ ۝٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And [remember] when the Prophet confided to one of his wives a statement; and when she informed [another] of it and Allah showed it to him, he made known part of it and ignored a part. And when he informed her about it, she said, "Who told you this?" He said, "I was informed by the Knowing, the Acquainted."
Abdel Haleem: The Prophet told something in confidence to one of his wives. When she disclosed it [to another wife] and God made this known to him, he confirmed part of it, keeping the rest to himself. When he confronted her with what she had done, she asked, ‘Who told you about this?’ and he replied, ‘The All Knowing, the All Aware told me.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: When the Prophet confided a fact unto one of his wives and when she afterward divulged it and Allah apprised him thereof, he made known (to her) part thereof and passed over part. And when he told it her she said: Who hath told thee? He said: The Knower, the Aware hath told me
The Reality, The Inevitable 69:18 Verb
یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ تُعۡرَضُونَ لَا تَخۡفَىٰ مِنكُمۡ خَافِیَةࣱ ۝١٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): That Day, you will be exhibited [for judgement]; not hidden among you is anything concealed
Abdel Haleem: On that Day you will be brought to judgement and none of your secrets will remain hidden
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: On that day ye will be exposed; not a secret of you will be hidden
Cattle, Livestock 6:106 Verb
ٱتَّبِعۡ مَاۤ أُوحِیَ إِلَیۡكَ مِن رَّبِّكَۖ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ وَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنِ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝١٠٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Follow, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you from your Lord - there is no deity except Him - and turn away from those who associate others with Allah
Abdel Haleem: Follow what has been revealed to you from your Lord, there is no God but Him. Turn away from those who join other gods with Him
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Follow that which is inspired in thee from thy Lord; there is no Allah save Him; and turn away from the idolaters
Cattle, Livestock 6:68 Verb
وَإِذَا رَأَیۡتَ ٱلَّذِینَ یَخُوضُونَ فِیۤ ءَایَـٰتِنَا فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ یَخُوضُوا۟ فِی حَدِیثٍ غَیۡرِهِۦۚ وَإِمَّا یُنسِیَنَّكَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ فَلَا تَقۡعُدۡ بَعۡدَ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ مَعَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٦٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversion. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people
Abdel Haleem: When you come across people who speak with scorn about Our revelations, turn away from them until they move on to another topic. If Satan should make you forget, then, when you have remembered, do not sit with those who are doing wrong
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And when thou seest those who meddle with Our revelations, withdraw from them until they meddle with another topic. And if the devil cause thee to forget, sit not, after the remembrance, with the congregation of wrong-doers
The Jinn 72:17 Verb
لِّنَفۡتِنَهُمۡ فِیهِۚ وَمَن یُعۡرِضۡ عَن ذِكۡرِ رَبِّهِۦ یَسۡلُكۡهُ عَذَابࣰا صَعَدࣰا ۝١٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): So We might test them therein. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord He will put into arduous punishment
Abdel Haleem: a test for them––but anyone who turns away from his Lord’s Revelation will be sent by Him to spiralling torment
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: That We may test them thereby, and whoso turneth away from the remembrance of his Lord; He will thrust him into ever-growing torment
The Heights, The Elevated Places 7:199 Verb
خُذِ ٱلۡعَفۡوَ وَأۡمُرۡ بِٱلۡعُرۡفِ وَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنِ ٱلۡجَـٰهِلِینَ ۝١٩٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant
Abdel Haleem: Be tolerant and command what is right: pay no attention to foolish people
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Keep to forgiveness (O Muhammad), and enjoin kindness, and turn away from the ignorant
Repentance 9:95 Verb
سَیَحۡلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَكُمۡ إِذَا ٱنقَلَبۡتُمۡ إِلَیۡهِمۡ لِتُعۡرِضُوا۟ عَنۡهُمۡۖ فَأَعۡرِضُوا۟ عَنۡهُمۡۖ إِنَّهُمۡ رِجۡسࣱۖ وَمَأۡوَىٰهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُ جَزَاۤءَۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَكۡسِبُونَ ۝٩٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): They will swear by Allah to you when you return to them that you would leave them alone. So leave them alone; indeed they are evil; and their refuge is Hell as recompense for what they had been earning
Abdel Haleem: When you return to them, they will swear to you by God in order to make you leave them alone- so leave them alone: they are loathsome, and Hell will be their home as a reward for their actions
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: They will swear by Allah unto you, when ye return unto them, that ye may let them be. Let them be, for lo! they are unclean, and their abode is hell as the reward for what they used to earn

Noun (32 verses)

Joseph 12:105 Noun
وَكَأَیِّن مِّنۡ ءَایَةࣲ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ یَمُرُّونَ عَلَیۡهَا وَهُمۡ عَنۡهَا مُعۡرِضُونَ ۝١٠٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And how many a sign within the heavens and earth do they pass over while they, therefrom, are turning away
Abdel Haleem: and there are many signs in the heavens and the earth that they pass by and give no heed to
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: How many a portent is there in the heavens and the earth which they pass by with face averted
The Rock, Stoneland, Rock City 15:81 Noun
وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا فَكَانُوا۟ عَنۡهَا مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٨١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away
Abdel Haleem: We gave them Our signs, but they turned their backs
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And we gave them Our revelations, but they were averse to them
The Cave 18:100 Noun
وَعَرَضۡنَا جَهَنَّمَ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لِّلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَرۡضًا ۝١٠٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And We will present Hell that Day to the Disbelievers, on display
Abdel Haleem: We shall show Hell to the disbelievers
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: On that day we shall present hell to the disbelievers, plain to view
The Prophets 21:1 Noun
۞ ٱقۡتَرَبَ لِلنَّاسِ حِسَابُهُمۡ وَهُمۡ فِی غَفۡلَةࣲ مُّعۡرِضُونَ ۝١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): [The time of] their account has approached for the people, while they are in heedlessness turning away
Abdel Haleem: Ever closer to people draws their reckoning, while they turn away, heedless
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Their reckoning draweth nigh for mankind, while they turn away in heedlessness
The Prophets 21:24 Noun
أَمِ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِهِۦۤ ءَالِهَةࣰۖ قُلۡ هَاتُوا۟ بُرۡهَـٰنَكُمۡۖ هَـٰذَا ذِكۡرُ مَن مَّعِیَ وَذِكۡرُ مَن قَبۡلِیۚ بَلۡ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ٱلۡحَقَّۖ فَهُم مُّعۡرِضُونَ ۝٢٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Or have they taken gods besides Him? Say, [O Muhammad], "Produce your proof. This [Qur'an] is the message for those with me and the message of those before me." But most of them do not know the truth, so they are turning away
Abdel Haleem: Have they chosen to worship other gods instead of Him? Say, ‘Bring your proof. This is the Scripture for those who are with me and the Scripture for those who went before me.’ But most of them do not recognize the truth, so they pay no heed
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Or have they chosen other gods beside Him? say: Bring your proof (of their godhead). This is the Reminder of those with me and those before me, but most of them know not the Truth and so they are averse
The Prophets 21:32 Noun
وَجَعَلۡنَا ٱلسَّمَاۤءَ سَقۡفࣰا مَّحۡفُوظࣰاۖ وَهُمۡ عَنۡ ءَایَـٰتِهَا مُعۡرِضُونَ ۝٣٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And We made the sky a protected ceiling, but they, from its signs, are turning away
Abdel Haleem: and We made the sky a well-secured canopy- yet from its wonders they turn away
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And we have made the sky a roof withheld (from them). Yet they turn away from its portents
The Prophets 21:42 Noun
قُلۡ مَن یَكۡلَؤُكُم بِٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ مِنَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِۚ بَلۡ هُمۡ عَن ذِكۡرِ رَبِّهِم مُّعۡرِضُونَ ۝٤٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Say, "Who can protect you at night or by day from the Most Merciful?" But they are, from the remembrance of their Lord, turning away
Abdel Haleem: Say, ‘Who could protect you night and day from the Lord of Mercy?’ Yet they turn away when their Lord is mentioned
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Say: Who guardeth you in the night or in the day from the Beneficent? Nay, but they turn away from mention of their Lord
The Believers 23:3 Noun
وَٱلَّذِینَ هُمۡ عَنِ ٱللَّغۡوِ مُعۡرِضُونَ ۝٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And they who turn away from ill speec
Abdel Haleem: who shun idle talk
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And who shun vain conversation
The Believers 23:71 Noun
وَلَوِ ٱتَّبَعَ ٱلۡحَقُّ أَهۡوَاۤءَهُمۡ لَفَسَدَتِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتُ وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَمَن فِیهِنَّۚ بَلۡ أَتَیۡنَـٰهُم بِذِكۡرِهِمۡ فَهُمۡ عَن ذِكۡرِهِم مُّعۡرِضُونَ ۝٧١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): But if the Truth had followed their inclinations, the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them would have been ruined. Rather, We have brought them their message, but they, from their message, are turning away
Abdel Haleem: but if the truth were in accordance with their desires, the heavens, the earth, and everyone in them would disintegrate. We have brought them their Reminder and they turn away from it
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And if the Truth had followed their desires, verily the heavens and the earth and whosoever is therein had been corrupted. Nay, We have brought them their Reminder, but from their Reminder they now turn away
The Light 24:33 Noun
وَلۡیَسۡتَعۡفِفِ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَجِدُونَ نِكَاحًا حَتَّىٰ یُغۡنِیَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦۗ وَٱلَّذِینَ یَبۡتَغُونَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ مِمَّا مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُكُمۡ فَكَاتِبُوهُمۡ إِنۡ عَلِمۡتُمۡ فِیهِمۡ خَیۡرࣰاۖ وَءَاتُوهُم مِّن مَّالِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِیۤ ءَاتَىٰكُمۡۚ وَلَا تُكۡرِهُوا۟ فَتَیَـٰتِكُمۡ عَلَى ٱلۡبِغَاۤءِ إِنۡ أَرَدۡنَ تَحَصُّنࣰا لِّتَبۡتَغُوا۟ عَرَضَ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۚ وَمَن یُكۡرِههُّنَّ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ إِكۡرَ ٰهِهِنَّ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٣٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): But let them who find not [the means for] marriage abstain [from sexual relations] until Allah enriches them from His bounty. And those who seek a contract [for eventual emancipation] from among whom your right hands possess - then make a contract with them if you know there is within them goodness and give them from the wealth of Allah which He has given you. And do not compel your slave girls to prostitution, if they desire chastity, to seek [thereby] the temporary interests of worldly life. And if someone should compel them, then indeed, Allah is [to them], after their compulsion, Forgiving and Merciful
Abdel Haleem: Those who are unable to marry should keep chaste until God gives them enough out of His bounty. If any of your slaves wish to pay for their freedom, make a contract with them accordingly, if you know they have good in them, and give them some of the wealth God has given you. Do not force your slave-girls into prostitution, when they themselves wish to remain honourable, in your quest for the short-term gains of this world, although, if they are forced, God will be forgiving and merciful to them
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And let those who cannot find a match keep chaste till Allah give them independence by His grace. And such of your slaves as seek a writing (of emancipation), write it for them if ye are aware of aught of good in them, and bestow upon them of the wealth of Allah which He hath bestowed upon you. Force not your slave-girls to whoredom that ye may seek enjoyment of the life of the world, if they would preserve their chastity. And if one force them, then (unto them), after their compulsion, lo! Allah will be Forgiving, Merciful
The Light 24:48 Noun
وَإِذَا دُعُوۤا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ لِیَحۡكُمَ بَیۡنَهُمۡ إِذَا فَرِیقࣱ مِّنۡهُم مُّعۡرِضُونَ ۝٤٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when they are called to [the words of] Allah and His Messenger to judge between them, at once a party of them turns aside [in refusal]
Abdel Haleem: and when they are summoned to God and His Messenger in order for him to judge between them, some of them turn away
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And when they appeal unto Allah and His messenger to judge between them, lo! a faction of them are averse
The Poets 26:5 Noun
وَمَا یَأۡتِیهِم مِّن ذِكۡرࣲ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ مُحۡدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنۡهُ مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And no revelation comes to them anew from the Most Merciful except that they turn away from it
Abdel Haleem: Whenever they are brought a new revelation from the Lord of Mercy, they turn away
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Never cometh there unto them a fresh reminder from the Beneficent One, but they turn away from it
The Cow 2:224 Noun
وَلَا تَجۡعَلُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ عُرۡضَةࣰ لِّأَیۡمَـٰنِكُمۡ أَن تَبَرُّوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ وَتُصۡلِحُوا۟ بَیۡنَ ٱلنَّاسِۚ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِیعٌ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٢٢٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And do not make [your oath by] Allah an excuse against being righteous and fearing Allah and making peace among people. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing
Abdel Haleem: [Believers], do not allow your oaths in God’s name to hinder you from doing good, being mindful of God and making peace between people. God hears and knows everything
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And make not Allah, by your oaths, a hindrance to your being righteous and observing your duty unto Him and making peace among mankind. Allah is Hearer, Knower
The Cow 2:83 Noun
وَإِذۡ أَخَذۡنَا مِیثَـٰقَ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ لَا تَعۡبُدُونَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ وَبِٱلۡوَ ٰلِدَیۡنِ إِحۡسَانࣰا وَذِی ٱلۡقُرۡبَىٰ وَٱلۡیَتَـٰمَىٰ وَٱلۡمَسَـٰكِینِ وَقُولُوا۟ لِلنَّاسِ حُسۡنࣰا وَأَقِیمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ ثُمَّ تَوَلَّیۡتُمۡ إِلَّا قَلِیلࣰا مِّنكُمۡ وَأَنتُم مُّعۡرِضُونَ ۝٨٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], "Do not worship except Allah ; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah." Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing
Abdel Haleem: Remember when We took a pledge from the Children of Israel: ‘Worship none but God; be good to your parents and kinsfolk, to orphans and the poor; speak good words to all people; keep up the prayer and pay the prescribed alms.’ Then all but a few of you turned away and paid no heed
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And (remember) when We made a covenant with the Children of Israel, (saying): Worship none save Allah (only), and be good to parents and to kindred and to orphans and the needy, and speak kindly to mankind; and establish worship and pay the poor-due. Then, after that, ye slid back, save a few of you, being averse
Ya Sin, Ya-Seen 36:46 Noun
وَمَا تَأۡتِیهِم مِّنۡ ءَایَةࣲ مِّنۡ ءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنۡهَا مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٤٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And no sign comes to them from the signs of their Lord except that they are from it turning away
Abdel Haleem: they ignore every single sign that comes to them from their Lord
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Never came a token of the tokens of their Lord to them, but they did turn away from it
The Letter Sad 38:68 Noun
أَنتُمۡ عَنۡهُ مُعۡرِضُونَ ۝٦٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): From which you turn away
Abdel Haleem: yet you ignore it

The Family of Imran, The House of Imran 3:133 Noun
۞ وَسَارِعُوۤا۟ إِلَىٰ مَغۡفِرَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ وَجَنَّةٍ عَرۡضُهَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتُ وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ أُعِدَّتۡ لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝١٣٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteou
Abdel Haleem: Hurry towards your Lord’s forgiveness and a Garden as wide as the heavens and earth prepared for the righteous
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And vie one with another for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a paradise as wide as are the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who ward off (evil)
The Family of Imran, The House of Imran 3:23 Noun
أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ نَصِیبࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ یُدۡعَوۡنَ إِلَىٰ كِتَـٰبِ ٱللَّهِ لِیَحۡكُمَ بَیۡنَهُمۡ ثُمَّ یَتَوَلَّىٰ فَرِیقࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ وَهُم مُّعۡرِضُونَ ۝٢٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Do you not consider, [O Muhammad], those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They are invited to the Scripture of Allah that it should arbitrate between them; then a party of them turns away, and they are refusing
Abdel Haleem: Have you considered those who were given a share of the Scripture? When they are asked to accept judgement from God’s Scripture, some of them turn their backs and walk away, all because they declare
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Hast thou not seen how those who have received a portion of the Scripture invoke the Scripture of Allah (in their disputes) that it may judge between them; then a faction of them turn away, being opposed (to it)
Explained in Detail, Revelations Well Expounded 41:51 Noun
وَإِذَاۤ أَنۡعَمۡنَا عَلَى ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنِ أَعۡرَضَ وَنَءَا بِجَانِبِهِۦ وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ فَذُو دُعَاۤءٍ عَرِیضࣲ ۝٥١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when We bestow favor upon man, he turns away and distances himself; but when evil touches him, then he is full of extensive supplication
Abdel Haleem: Whenever We are gracious to man, he goes away haughtily, but, as soon as evil touches him, he turns to prolonged prayer
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: When We show favour unto man, he withdraweth and turneth aside, but when ill toucheth him then he aboundeth in prayer
The Wind-curved Sandhills, The Dunes, The Sandhills 46:24 Noun
فَلَمَّا رَأَوۡهُ عَارِضࣰا مُّسۡتَقۡبِلَ أَوۡدِیَتِهِمۡ قَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَا عَارِضࣱ مُّمۡطِرُنَاۚ بَلۡ هُوَ مَا ٱسۡتَعۡجَلۡتُم بِهِۦۖ رِیحࣱ فِیهَا عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝٢٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when they saw it as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said, "This is a cloud bringing us rain!" Rather, it is that for which you were impatient: a wind, within it a painful punishment
Abdel Haleem: When they saw a cloud approaching their valley, they said, ‘This cloud will give us rain!’ ‘No indeed! It is what you wanted to hasten: a storm-wind bearing a painful punishmen
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Then, when they beheld it as a dense cloud coming toward their valleys, they said: Here is a cloud bringing us rain. Nay, but it is that which ye did seek to hasten, a wind wherein is painful torment
The Wind-curved Sandhills, The Dunes, The Sandhills 46:3 Noun
مَا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَأَجَلࣲ مُّسَمࣰّىۚ وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ عَمَّاۤ أُنذِرُوا۟ مُعۡرِضُونَ ۝٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): We did not create the heavens and earth and what is between them except in truth and [for] a specified term. But those who disbelieve, from that of which they are warned, are turning away
Abdel Haleem: It was for a true purpose and a specific term that We created heaven and earth and everything in between, yet those who deny the truth ignore the warning they have been given
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: We created not the heavens and the earth and all that is between them save with truth, and for a term appointed. But those who disbelieve turn away from that whereof they are warned
Women 4:128 Noun
وَإِنِ ٱمۡرَأَةٌ خَافَتۡ مِنۢ بَعۡلِهَا نُشُوزًا أَوۡ إِعۡرَاضࣰا فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیۡهِمَاۤ أَن یُصۡلِحَا بَیۡنَهُمَا صُلۡحࣰاۚ وَٱلصُّلۡحُ خَیۡرࣱۗ وَأُحۡضِرَتِ ٱلۡأَنفُسُ ٱلشُّحَّۚ وَإِن تُحۡسِنُوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣰا ۝١٢٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And if a woman fears from her husband contempt or evasion, there is no sin upon them if they make terms of settlement between them - and settlement is best. And present in [human] souls is stinginess. But if you do good and fear Allah - then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted
Abdel Haleem: If a wife fears high-handedness or alienation from her husband, neither of them will be blamed if they come to a peaceful settlement, for peace is best. Although human souls are prone to selfishness, if you do good and are mindful of God, He is well aware of all that you do
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: If a woman feareth ill treatment from her husband, or desertion, it is no sin for them twain if they make terms of peace between themselves. Peace is better. But greed hath been made present in the minds (of men). If ye do good and keep from evil, lo! Allah is ever Informed of what ye do
Women 4:94 Noun
یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِذَا ضَرَبۡتُمۡ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ فَتَبَیَّنُوا۟ وَلَا تَقُولُوا۟ لِمَنۡ أَلۡقَىٰۤ إِلَیۡكُمُ ٱلسَّلَـٰمَ لَسۡتَ مُؤۡمِنࣰا تَبۡتَغُونَ عَرَضَ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا فَعِندَ ٱللَّهِ مَغَانِمُ كَثِیرَةࣱۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ كُنتُم مِّن قَبۡلُ فَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ فَتَبَیَّنُوۤا۟ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣰا ۝٩٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): O you who have believed, when you go forth [to fight] in the cause of Allah , investigate; and do not say to one who gives you [a greeting of] peace "You are not a believer," aspiring for the goods of worldly life; for with Allah are many acquisitions. You [yourselves] were like that before; then Allah conferred His favor upon you, so investigate. Indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted
Abdel Haleem: So, you who believe, be careful when you go to fight in God’s way, and do not say to someone who offers you a greeting of peace, ‘You are not a believer,’ out of desire for the chance gains of this life- God has plenty of gains for you. You yourself were in the same position [once], but God was gracious to you, so be careful: God is fully aware of what you do
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: O ye who believe! When ye go forth (to fight) in the way of Allah, be careful to discriminate, and say not unto one who offereth you peace: "Thou art not a believer," seeking the chance profits of this life (so that ye may despoil him). With Allah are plenteous spoils. Even thus (as he now is) were ye before; but Allah hath since then been gracious unto you. Therefore take care to discriminate. Allah is ever Informed of what ye do
The Iron 57:21 Noun
سَابِقُوۤا۟ إِلَىٰ مَغۡفِرَةࣲ مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ وَجَنَّةٍ عَرۡضُهَا كَعَرۡضِ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ أُعِدَّتۡ لِلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِۦۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ فَضۡلُ ٱللَّهِ یُؤۡتِیهِ مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَٱللَّهُ ذُو ٱلۡفَضۡلِ ٱلۡعَظِیمِ ۝٢١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Race toward forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden whose width is like the width of the heavens and earth, prepared for those who believed in Allah and His messengers. That is the bounty of Allah which He gives to whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty
Abdel Haleem: So race for your Lord’s forgiveness and a Garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for those who believe in God and His messengers: that is God’s bounty, which He bestows on whoever He pleases. God’s bounty is infinite
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Race one with another for forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden whereof the breadth is as the breadth of the heavens and the earth, which is in store for those who believe in Allah and His messengers. Such is the bounty of Allah, which He bestoweth upon whom He will, and Allah is of Infinite Bounty
Cattle, Livestock 6:35 Noun
وَإِن كَانَ كَبُرَ عَلَیۡكَ إِعۡرَاضُهُمۡ فَإِنِ ٱسۡتَطَعۡتَ أَن تَبۡتَغِیَ نَفَقࣰا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَوۡ سُلَّمࣰا فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ فَتَأۡتِیَهُم بِءَایَةࣲۚ وَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ لَجَمَعَهُمۡ عَلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰۚ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلۡجَـٰهِلِینَ ۝٣٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And if their evasion is difficult for you, then if you are able to seek a tunnel into the earth or a stairway into the sky to bring them a sign, [then do so]. But if Allah had willed, He would have united them upon guidance. So never be of the ignorant
Abdel Haleem: If you find rejection by the disbelievers so hard to bear, then seek a tunnel into the ground or a ladder into the sky, if you can, and bring them a sign: God could bring them all to guidance if it were His will, so do not join the ignorant
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And if their aversion is grievous unto thee, then, if thou canst, seek a way down into the earth or a ladder unto the sky that thou mayst bring unto them a portent (to convince them all)! - If Allah willed, He could have brought them all together to the guidance - So be not thou among the foolish ones
Cattle, Livestock 6:4 Noun
وَمَا تَأۡتِیهِم مِّنۡ ءَایَةࣲ مِّنۡ ءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ عَنۡهَا مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And no sign comes to them from the signs of their Lord except that they turn away therefrom
Abdel Haleem: but every time revelation comes to them from their Lord, they turn their backs on it
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Never came there unto them a revelation of the revelations of Allah but they did turn away from it
The Cloaked One, The Man Wearing a Cloak, The Clothed One 74:49 Noun
فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلتَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِینَ ۝٤٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning awa
Abdel Haleem: What is the matter with them? Why do they turn away from the warning
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Why now turn they away from the Admonishment
The Heights, The Elevated Places 7:169 Noun
فَخَلَفَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ خَلۡفࣱ وَرِثُوا۟ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ یَأۡخُذُونَ عَرَضَ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡأَدۡنَىٰ وَیَقُولُونَ سَیُغۡفَرُ لَنَا وَإِن یَأۡتِهِمۡ عَرَضࣱ مِّثۡلُهُۥ یَأۡخُذُوهُۚ أَلَمۡ یُؤۡخَذۡ عَلَیۡهِم مِّیثَـٰقُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ أَن لَّا یَقُولُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلۡحَقَّ وَدَرَسُوا۟ مَا فِیهِۗ وَٱلدَّارُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةُ خَیۡرࣱ لِّلَّذِینَ یَتَّقُونَۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٦٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And there followed them successors who inherited the Scripture [while] taking the commodities of this lower life and saying, "It will be forgiven for us." And if an offer like it comes to them, they will [again] take it. Was not the covenant of the Scripture taken from them that they would not say about Allah except the truth, and they studied what was in it? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allah , so will you not use reason
Abdel Haleem: and they were succeeded by generations who, although they inherited the Scripture, took the fleeting gains of this lower world, saying, ‘We shall be forgiven,’ and indeed taking them again if other such gains came their way. Was a pledge not taken from them, writ-ten in the Scripture, to say nothing but the truth about God? And they have studied its contents well. For those who are mindful of God, the Hereafter is better. ‘Why do you not use your reason?’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And a generation hath succeeded them who inherited the scriptures. They grasp the goods of this low life (as the price of evil-doing) and say: It will be forgiven us. And if there came to them (again) the offer of the like, they would accept it (and would sin again). Hath not the covenant of the Scripture been taken on their behalf that they should not speak aught concerning Allah save the truth? And they have studied that which is therein. And the abode of the Hereafter is better, for those who ward off (evil). Have ye then no sense
The Spoils of War 8:23 Noun
وَلَوۡ عَلِمَ ٱللَّهُ فِیهِمۡ خَیۡرࣰا لَّأَسۡمَعَهُمۡۖ وَلَوۡ أَسۡمَعَهُمۡ لَتَوَلَّوا۟ وَّهُم مُّعۡرِضُونَ ۝٢٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Had Allah known any good in them, He would have made them hear. And if He had made them hear, they would [still] have turned away, while they were refusing
Abdel Haleem: If God had known there was any good in them, He would have made them hear, but even if He had, they would still have turned away and taken no notice
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Had Allah known of any good in them He would have made them hear, but had He made them hear they would have turned away, averse
The Spoils of War 8:67 Noun
مَا كَانَ لِنَبِیٍّ أَن یَكُونَ لَهُۥۤ أَسۡرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ یُثۡخِنَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ تُرِیدُونَ عَرَضَ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَٱللَّهُ یُرِیدُ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةَۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِیزٌ حَكِیمࣱ ۝٦٧
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): It is not for a prophet to have captives [of war] until he inflicts a massacre [upon Allah 's enemies] in the land. Some Muslims desire the commodities of this world, but Allah desires [for you] the Hereafter. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise
Abdel Haleem: It is not right for a prophet to take captives before he has conquered the battlefield. You [people] desire the transient goods of this world, but God desires the Hereafter [for you]- God is mighty and wise
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: It is not for any prophet to have captives until he hath made slaughter in the land. Ye desire the lure of this world and Allah desireth (for you) the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty, Wise
Repentance 9:42 Noun
لَوۡ كَانَ عَرَضࣰا قَرِیبࣰا وَسَفَرࣰا قَاصِدࣰا لَّٱتَّبَعُوكَ وَلَـٰكِنۢ بَعُدَتۡ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلشُّقَّةُۚ وَسَیَحۡلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ لَوِ ٱسۡتَطَعۡنَا لَخَرَجۡنَا مَعَكُمۡ یُهۡلِكُونَ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝٤٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): Had it been an easy gain and a moderate trip, the hypocrites would have followed you, but distant to them was the journey. And they will swear by Allah , "If we were able, we would have gone forth with you," destroying themselves [through false oaths], and Allah knows that indeed they are liars
Abdel Haleem: They would certainly have followed you [Prophet] if the benefit was within sight and the journey short, but the distance seemed too great for them. They will swear by God, ‘If we could, we certainly would go out [to battle] with you,’ but they ruin themselves, for God knows that they are lying
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Had it been a near adventure and an easy journey they had followed thee, but the distance seemed too far for them. Yet will they swear by Allah (saying): If we had been able we would surely have set out with you. They destroy their souls, and Allah knoweth that they verily are liars
Repentance 9:76 Noun
فَلَمَّاۤ ءَاتَىٰهُم مِّن فَضۡلِهِۦ بَخِلُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَتَوَلَّوا۟ وَّهُم مُّعۡرِضُونَ ۝٧٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): But when he gave them from His bounty, they were stingy with it and turned away while they refused
Abdel Haleem: yet when He did give them some of His bounty, they became mean and turned obstinately away
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Yet when He gave them of His bounty, they hoarded it and turned away, averse
