ٱلنَّاسَ l-nāsa

ٱلسِّحْرَ l-siḥ'ra

وَمَآ wamā

أُنزِلَ unzila
was sent down V
عَلَى ʿalā

ٱلْمَلَكَيْنِ l-malakayni

بِبَابِلَ bibābila

هَٰرُوتَ hārūta

وَمَٰرُوتَ wamārūta

يُعَلِّمَانِ yuʿallimāni

مِنْ min

أَحَدٍ aḥadin

حَتَّىٰ ḥattā

يَقُولَآ yaqūlā

إِنَّمَا innamā

نَحْنُ naḥnu

فِتْنَةٌ fit'natun

فَلَا falā

تَكْفُرْ takfur
disbelieve V
فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ fayataʿallamūna

مِنْهُمَا min'humā

يُفَرِّقُونَ yufarriqūna

بِهِۦ bihi

بَيْنَ bayna

ٱلْمَرْءِ l-mari

وَمَا wamā

بِضَآرِّينَ biḍārrīna

بِهِۦ bihi

ٱللَّهِ l-lahi

وَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ wayataʿallamūna
And they learn V
مَا mā

يَضُرُّهُمْ yaḍurruhum
harms them V
وَلَا walā
and not Prep
يَنفَعُهُمْ yanfaʿuhum
profits them V
وَلَقَدْ walaqad
And indeed Prep
عَلِمُوا۟ ʿalimū
they knew V
لَمَنِ lamani
that whoever Noun
ٱشْتَرَىٰهُ ish'tarāhu
buys it V
مَا mā
not Prep
لَهُۥ lahu
for him Noun
فِى fī
in Prep
ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ l-ākhirati
the Hereafter Noun
مِنْ min
any Prep
خَلَٰقٍ khalāqin
share Noun
وَلَبِئْسَ walabi'sa
And surely evil V
مَا mā
(is) what Noun
شَرَوْا۟ sharaw
they sold V
بِهِۦٓ bihi
with it Noun
أَنفُسَهُمْ anfusahum
themselves Noun
لَوْ law
if Prep
كَانُوا۟ kānū
they were V
يَعْلَمُونَ yaʿlamūna
(to) know V

and followed what the evil ones had fabricated about the Kingdom of Solomon instead. Not that Solomon himself was a disbeliever; it was the evil ones who were disbelievers. They taught people witchcraft and what was revealed in Babylon to the two angels Harut and Marut. Yet these two never taught anyone without first warning him, ‘We are sent only to tempt- do not disbelieve.’ From these two, they learned what can cause discord between man and wife, although they harm no one with it except by God’s leave. They learned what harmed them, not what benefited them, knowing full well that whoever gained [this knowledge] would lose any share in the Hereafter. Evil indeed is the [price] for which they sold their souls, if only they knew

Arabic Text

وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ مَا تَتۡلُوا۟ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینُ عَلَىٰ مُلۡكِ سُلَیۡمَـٰنَۖ وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَیۡمَـٰنُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلشَّیَـٰطِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ یُعَلِّمُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ ٱلسِّحۡرَ وَمَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَى ٱلۡمَلَكَیۡنِ بِبَابِلَ هَـٰرُوتَ وَمَـٰرُوتَۚ وَمَا یُعَلِّمَانِ مِنۡ أَحَدٍ حَتَّىٰ یَقُولَاۤ إِنَّمَا نَحۡنُ فِتۡنَةࣱ فَلَا تَكۡفُرۡۖ فَیَتَعَلَّمُونَ مِنۡهُمَا مَا یُفَرِّقُونَ بِهِۦ بَیۡنَ ٱلۡمَرۡءِ وَزَوۡجِهِۦۚ وَمَا هُم بِضَاۤرِّینَ بِهِۦ مِنۡ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَیَتَعَلَّمُونَ مَا یَضُرُّهُمۡ وَلَا یَنفَعُهُمۡۚ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمُوا۟ لَمَنِ ٱشۡتَرَىٰهُ مَا لَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ مِنۡ خَلَـٰقࣲۚ وَلَبِئۡسَ مَا شَرَوۡا۟ بِهِۦۤ أَنفُسَهُمۡۚ لَوۡ كَانُوا۟ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٠٢

wa-ittabaʿū mā tatlū l-shayāṭīnu ʿalā mul'ki sulaymāna wamā kafara sulaymānu walākinna l-shayāṭīna kafarū yuʿallimūna l-nāsa l-siḥ'ra wamā unzila ʿalā l-malakayni bibābila hārūta wamārūta wamā yuʿallimāni min aḥadin ḥattā yaqūlā innamā naḥnu fit'natun falā takfur fayataʿallamūna min'humā mā yufarriqūna bihi bayna l-mari wazawjihi wamā hum biḍārrīna bihi min aḥadin illā bi-idh'ni l-lahi wayataʿallamūna mā yaḍurruhum walā yanfaʿuhum walaqad ʿalimū lamani ish'tarāhu mā lahu fī l-ākhirati min khalāqin walabi'sa mā sharaw bihi anfusahum law kānū yaʿlamūn
