Truly in the heavens and the earth there are signs (āyāt) for those who believe.He said:The signs (ʿalāmāt) are for the one who has certainty (yaqīn) in his heart, and who is guided by their existence (kawn) to the One who has brought them into existence (mukawwin).His words:

وَٱخۡتِلَـٰفِ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ وَمَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مِن رِّزۡقࣲ فَأَحۡیَا بِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ مَوۡتِهَا وَتَصۡرِیفِ ٱلرِّیَـٰحِ ءَایَـٰتࣱ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٥

in the alternation of night and day, in the rain God provides, sending it down from the sky and reviving the dead earth with it, and in His shifting of the winds there are signs for those who use their reason

وَیۡلࣱ لِّكُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِیمࣲ ۝٧

Woe to every lying sinful perso
یَسۡمَعُ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِ ثُمَّ یُصِرُّ مُسۡتَكۡبِرࣰا كَأَن لَّمۡ یَسۡمَعۡهَاۖ فَبَشِّرۡهُ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِیمࣲ ۝٨
Abdel Haleem
who hears God’s revelations being recited to him, yet persists in his arrogance as if he had never heard them––[Prophet] bring him news of a painful torment!––

وَإِذَا عَلِمَ مِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا شَیۡءًا ٱتَّخَذَهَا هُزُوًاۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ مُّهِینࣱ ۝٩

مِّن وَرَاۤىِٕهِمۡ جَهَنَّمُۖ وَلَا یُغۡنِی عَنۡهُم مَّا كَسَبُوا۟ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَا مَا ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِیمٌ ۝١٠
Abdel Haleem
Hell lurks behind them and their gains will not benefit them, nor will those beings they took as protectors beside God––a tremendous torment awaits them
هَـٰذَا هُدࣰىۖ وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ لَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ مِّن رِّجۡزٍ أَلِیمٌ ۝١١
Abdel Haleem
This is true guidance; those who reject their Lord’s revelations will have a woeful torment
۞ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی سَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡبَحۡرَ لِتَجۡرِیَ ٱلۡفُلۡكُ فِیهِ بِأَمۡرِهِۦ وَلِتَبۡتَغُوا۟ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦ وَلَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝١٢
Abdel Haleem
It is God who subjected the sea for you––ships sail on it by His command so that you can seek His bounty and give Him thanks––

وَسَخَّرَ لَكُم مَّا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِیعࣰا مِّنۡهُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝١٣
Abdel Haleem
He has subjected all that is in the heavens and the earth for your benefit, as a gift from Him. There truly are signs in this for those who reflect

He has put at your disposal all that is in the heavens and the earth, [as a gift] from Him�He said:When the heart of the servant finds tranquil repose (sukūn) in its Master, the state of the servantbecomes strong. Subsequently everything is subjected to him, and indeed everything is on intimate terms with him, even the birds and the beasts.It was related of al-Thawrī that he said, �I set off with Shaybān al-Rāʿī towards Mecca and on the way a lion appeared before us, so I said, �O Shaybān, do you not see this dog?� He replied, �Do not fear! It�s only that the lion heard the speech of Shaybān al-Rāʿī so he started to wag his tail.� Then Shaybān approached him and proceeded to take hold of his ear and twist it. Then I said, �O Shaybān what is this fame you have?� He answered, �And what sort of fame is it that you see, O Thawrī? I swear by God that if it wasn�t for the fear of fame I wouldn�t have carried my provisions for the journey to Mecca other than [loaded] on its back.� Shaybān was on his way to the Friday prayer when he caught sight of a wolf with his sheep, so he said to it, �Sit with the sheep until I return and I will give you a lamb.� When he returned from the Friday prayer, he found the wolf sitting down looking after the sheep, so he gave him a lamb to take away.� Sahl used to say to a youth who kept his company, �If you are afraid of predatory beasts then do not keep my company.� And he was asked, �How does a man reach the rank of charismatic gifts (karāmāt)? He replied:�Whoever abstains from (zahada) the world for forty days in veracity and sincerity (ṣādiqan wa mukhliṣan), will have charismatic gifts (karāmāt) manifested to Him from God, Mighty and Majestic is He. But if [such gifts] are not manifested to a person, it is due to the lack of true faith and sincerity in his renunciation� � or words to that effect.His words, Exalted is He:

Whoever does good benefits himself, and whoever does evil harms himself: you will all be returned to your Lord

We gave scripture, wisdom, and prophethood to the Children of Israel; We provided them with good things and favoured them above others

وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُم بَیِّنَـٰتࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَمۡرِۖ فَمَا ٱخۡتَلَفُوۤا۟ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡعِلۡمُ بَغۡیَۢا بَیۡنَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ یَقۡضِی بَیۡنَهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ فِیمَا كَانُوا۟ فِیهِ یَخۡتَلِفُونَ ۝١٧
Abdel Haleem
We gave them clear proof in matters [of religion]. They differed among themselves out of mutual rivalry, only after knowledge came to them: on the Day of Resurrection your Lord will judge between them regarding their differences

and We gave them clear signs of the commandment�He said:We opened their ears so that they could understand Our discourse (khiṭāb), and We made their hearts (afʾida) as vessels (wiʿāʾ) for Our speech (kalām). We gave them true physiognomy (firāsa), by which they can make certain and truly-informed judgements concerning Our servants. These are the �clear signs of the commandment� on the inner path (ṭarīq al-bāṭin).His words, Exalted is He:

ثُمَّ جَعَلۡنَـٰكَ عَلَىٰ شَرِیعَةࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَمۡرِ فَٱتَّبِعۡهَا وَلَا تَتَّبِعۡ أَهۡوَاۤءَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٨
Abdel Haleem
Now We have set you [Muhammad] on a clear religious path, so follow it. Do not follow the desires of those who lack [true] knowledge
Sahl al-Tustari

Then We set you [Muḥammad] on a [clear] course (sharīʿa) of the commandment, so followit�He said:That is, a way (minhaj) consisting of the established norms (sunan) of the prophets who came before you, for they [were following] the way of guidance; and the Law (sharīʿa) is the clear thoroughfare that extends to the path of salvation (ṭarīq al-najāt) and the way of right guidance(sabīl al-rushd).His words, Exalted is He:

they cannot help you against God in any way. Wrongdoers only have each other to protect them; the righteous have God Himself as their protector

Assuredly they will not avail you in any way against God�Whoever becomes wealthy without recourse to God will become needy through his wealth; and whoever gains honour without recourse to Him will be humiliated through his honour. Take note of how God says: Assuredly they will not avail you in any way against God�His words, Exalted is He:

أَمۡ حَسِبَ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱجۡتَرَحُوا۟ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتِ أَن نَّجۡعَلَهُمۡ كَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ سَوَاۤءࣰ مَّحۡیَاهُمۡ وَمَمَاتُهُمۡۚ سَاۤءَ مَا یَحۡكُمُونَ ۝٢١
Abdel Haleem
Do those who commit evil deeds really think that We will deal with them in the same way as those who believe and do righteous deeds, that they will be alike in their living and their dying? How badly they judge
Sahl al-Tustari

Do those who have perpetrated evil acts suppose that We shall treat them as those who believe and perform righteous deeds, equally in their life and in their death?...He said:The one who has been seated on the carpet of conformity (bisāṭ al-muwāfaqa) is not like the one who has been made to stand in the station of opposition (maqām al-mukhālafa); for the carpet of conformity brings the person [stationed] upon it to the �seats� of true faith (maqāʿid al-ṣidq), whereas the station of opposition will plunge the person who holds it into a blazing fire.His words, Exalted is He:

God created the heavens and earth for a true purpose: to reward each soul according to its deeds. They will not be wronged

أَفَرَءَیۡتَ مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَـٰهَهُۥ هَوَىٰهُ وَأَضَلَّهُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمࣲ وَخَتَمَ عَلَىٰ سَمۡعِهِۦ وَقَلۡبِهِۦ وَجَعَلَ عَلَىٰ بَصَرِهِۦ غِشَـٰوَةࣰ فَمَن یَهۡدِیهِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ٱللَّهِۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ۝٢٣
Abdel Haleem
[Prophet], consider the one who has taken his own desire as a god, whom God allows to stray in the face of knowledge, sealing his ears and heart and covering his eyes- who can guide such a person after God [has done this]? Will you [people] not take heed
Sahl al-Tustari

Have you not seen him who has taken as his god his [own] desire...?He said:That is to say, have you considered the one who is submersed in the delights that his lower self [is deriving] from this world, being neither scrupulous (wariʿ) nor mindful of God (taqī)? Hence, he pursues his own will (murād), and does not take the path of emulation (iqtidāʾ), but prefers the lusts of this world over the bliss of the life to come. So, how will he be able to attain the high ranks and sublime stations (manāzil saniyya) in the Hereafter?�and whom God led astray knowingly�?He said:That is, with God�s prior knowledge [concerning him] that He would withdraw from him His protection and aid.His words:

They say, ‘There is only our life in this world: we die, we live, nothing but time destroys us.’ They have no knowledge of this; they only follow guesswork. Their only argument

[Prophet], say, ‘It is God who gives you life, then causes you to die, and then He gathers you all to the Day of Resurrection of which there is no doubt, though most people do not comprehend.’

وَتَرَىٰ كُلَّ أُمَّةࣲ جَاثِیَةࣰۚ كُلُّ أُمَّةࣲ تُدۡعَىٰۤ إِلَىٰ كِتَـٰبِهَا ٱلۡیَوۡمَ تُجۡزَوۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٢٨

You will see every community kneeling. Every community will be summoned to its record: ‘Today you will be repaid for what you did

And you will see every community crouching� He said:[Crouching] on their knees, each [community] contending for itself in the presence of [its] escort (murāfaqa). The one who is true in faith (ṣādiq) will strive to prove his veracity (ṣidq), and the denying unbeliever (jāḥid) will strive to defend himself. Each one will be judged according to what he recorded [for himself], his ink being his saliva, his pen his tongue and his parchment his bodily members.His words:

When it was said to you, “God’s promise is true: there is no doubt about the Hour,” did you not reply, “We know nothing of the Hour. This is only conjecture in our opinion. We are not convinced”?’

It will be said, ‘Today We shall ignore you just as you ignored your appointment with this Day. The Fire will be your home and no one will help you

ذَ ٰلِكُم بِأَنَّكُمُ ٱتَّخَذۡتُمۡ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ هُزُوࣰا وَغَرَّتۡكُمُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۚ فَٱلۡیَوۡمَ لَا یُخۡرَجُونَ مِنۡهَا وَلَا هُمۡ یُسۡتَعۡتَبُونَ ۝٣٥
Abdel Haleem
because you received God’s revelations with ridicule and were deceived by worldly life.’ They will not be brought out of the Fire on that Day, nor will they be given the chance to make amends

To Him belongs all grandeur in the heavens and the earth�He said:Exaltedness (ʿuluww), omnipotence (qudra), majesty (ʿaẓama), power and strength (ḥawl wa quwwa) belong to Him in the entire dominion of creation (mulk). He will support with His power and strength whoever seeks His protection, whilst He will consign whoever relies on himself to his own care. But God, Glorified and Exalted is He, knows best.His words, Exalted is He:
